Will me being super nervous cause surgeon to cancel my surgery? When I’m nervous my bp spikes up. Is there anything I can do?

As long as you don't have poorly controlled hypertension, you should be fine. If you are concerned, I suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeons as most of us have some recommendations which might help you keep your nerves under control.

Being nervous before surgery is normal feeling and everybody has it. However, there are people that become overwhelmed with nervousness that may cancel surgery in the last moment. In order to cope with it, you should discussed that particular issue with your surgeon and primary care physician; a group of medications called analytics may be used before and short time after surgery to help keep this situation under control. Hello. Great question. Your situation should not be a cause for your surgery to be cancelled. As long as your blood pressure at regular pace is normal. However, I will suggest discussing this with your surgeon prior to surgery. Every surgeon has their own pre op protocols.

It is not uncommon for otherwise healthy individuals to have an elevated blood pressure just prior to surgery. Typically an appropriate I.V. dose of medicine will control this type of transient hypertension and allow surgery to proceed uneventfully. If your blood pressure has otherwise been normal in the past this should not be an issue.  Best of Luck  Dr Harrell

It is very common to be nervous prior to surgery.  If your blood pressure is usually in the normal range, then this should not be a problem.  The anesthesiologist will control your pressure during the procedure, and you should go back to normal post operatively.  

Prior to surgery, you will be given some medication to help relax you. If you are not routinely on blood pressure medication and have normal pressure, you should do well in surgery. Please discuss all your concerns with your surgeon.

if your blood pressure is normal when you're relaxed then it's unlikely anxiety will cost enough of an increase in blood pressure to cancel your surgery.  Normal blood pressure is 120/80 or less. If your numbers are close to these or better on a good day and it's unlikely you'll come in greater than 145/90 with anxiety. If it does then you're probably hypertensive. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD 

The real question is: Why are you nervous? Is it because of the fear of surgery or is it because you are a nervous person by nature? Are you not sure about what you are having done or are you not convinced by your choice of surgeon? Surgery is usually very safe and it is normal to be a bit anxious about anesthesia, so you are within the norm if this is the cause. This MIGHT raise your systolic BP and increase your heart rate but your diastolic BP will remain within normal and you surgery will not be cancelled. Best of luck.
