Is it normal that my plastic surgeon dug out spitting sutures leaving this deep hole? (Photo)

Thank you for providing a photo.  Having sutures spitting up can happen, it looks like a big wound but it will heal.  Be patient and remember to follow your surgeons instructions as he knows best.

Dear jessisaavedra,this type of wound is not uncommon after tummy tuck. It is usually caused by poor blood flow or spitting suture. I would suggest you to consult your plastic surgeon, follow your surgeon's instructions and keep your wound clean and covered. I appreciate your concern, however deep dissolvable sutures are needed for closure during tummytuck and sometimes the sutures are rejected by the body before they have time to dissolve. It is not uncommon to see this after Tummytuck surgery. The small wounds that are left will heal in uneventfully. Follow up with your plastic surgeon and discuss your concerns. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question and photograph.  If causing a wound healing issue it is common to remove any sutures that present themselves along your incision.  Though a larger hole than typical for a suture problem, I would recommend local wound care to speed healing.  Hope this helps.

You should be doing twice-daily dressing changes (like a "wet to dry" dressing) in this open wound, to encourage it to heal in. If you are unclear about what this means or how to do it, please contact your surgeon's office for details. 

Generally once the offending suture material is removed the area will heal. It can sometimes go slowly which can be frustrating so be sure to follow your surgeon's advice for wound care. This type of wound heals from the inside out, meaning that the area deepest will heal first and then eventually heal at the skin surface.

Appears asa reaction to the removed suture. This will heal slowly over the next 30 days++. Sometimes I use PRF injections to re to increase rate of healing. 

Thank you for your question and photo.  This appears to be more than just a spitting suture issue however at this point likely to best course of action is to manage the wound and let it slowly heal and then if needed revise the scar.  It may also be reasonable to clean up the wound and reclose it.  Discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon.  I don't think that digging out the suture was the cause of this wound.  This wound while looking dramatic at this point will ultimately heal and not have any significant effect on your final outcome.Jeffrey Thaxton, MD FACSCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Hi darling, thank you for your question.If it is not infected it doesn't need to cause any problems. In my practice I always try to keep it covered to prevent further complications but your PS is the one in charge and got his own protocols, I recommend following up with him and rest as much as you can.
