Is it normal that my plastic surgeon dug out spitting sutures leaving this deep hole? (Photo)

I have an open wound due to spitting stitches with no infection. The PS dug out the stitch leaving me with a deep hole. Is it common? Could it keep opening bigger? He says it's not infected just follow up in 2 weeks.
