Thanks for your question. Every surgeon have they'r own preop and post op protocol. Usually a regular blood test is asked and if needed, a medical clearance or extra tests are require. In all cases your safety is of utmost importance to us. You definitely have to choose your surgeon correctly and make sure that he/she has the training and experience to meet your goals with absolute safety. Best is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with specialized expertise in this procedure.
Thank you for your question! Your clearances for surgery are dependent on your medical history and your surgeon will decide on what is needed in order for you to be cleared. You may just need labs drawn at a location such as lab Corp, but significant medical history may require that you be cleared by a physician. I recommend consulting with a board certified plastic surgeon who can create a personalized plan for you. Best of luck!

If PSs have a preference, they will specify the lab. Otherwise, either the PCP's lab or labcorp/quest can be used to perform the labs requested by your PS.Most surgeons will do some blood work prior to surgery, but some surgeons do not. It is always best to ask these questions of your chosen surgeon as recommendations may be different. The surgeon you select should know everything about your past medical and surgical history and be able to make a determination about what labs should be ordered, the need for EKG, the need for medical clearance, the need for anticoagulation, the appropriateness of the surgical intervention based upon the risk factors and current physique, etc.
We generally request medical clearance before any procedure done in general anesthesia. This is in particular important if surgeon did not have chance to see patient multiple times before surgery and hes no detailed knowledge about medical condition(s) that may jeopardize safety of surgery. You can do your labs in any lab but for medical clearance it is best to be done by your primary care physician (internist, family medicine) if you have one. If you do not have your PCP it is best to do it in medical office recommended by your friend, practice near you home or one recommended by surgery center staff. Good luck.
Dear Fisherdolloct3rd,every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. Some plastic surgeons demand clearance from patient's doctor, others don't. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

This is purely at the discretion of the plastic surgeon. Some plastic surgeons require a full medical evaluation and clearance from the primary care physician. Other plastic surgeons will obtain the laboratory tests and perform their own clearance. Patients with medical problems are more likely to require full medical clearance and younger patients with no medical problems and no past medical history might simply require laboratory tests with evaluation by the plastic surgeon. I hope this helps. Best regards
Cosmetic surgery is real surgery. If you are having a heart transplantation or coronary artery bypass surgery you would not want the cheapest surgeon, you would want the best. You also would want the best and real medical workup before surgery as opposed to taking shortcuts.Plastic surgery is just a serious as any other type of surgery. This is real general anesthesia not fake. You need to do the best medical workup with a clearance before surgery just like you would for any other surgery. Don't take this for granted. This is not makeup.
in our practice young healthy people do not get any blood tests. This seems to be common in areas like the Dominican republic and Mexico. Of course if people have underlying medical conditions then work ups including laboratories may be done before surgery. If your plastic surgeon ordered pre-op labs then that's who should order them. This is how our office works. Since you have a doctor you're working with you should contact their office and ask what tests they request and if they do ask them to order the tests for you. The primary care doctors responsibility if there's any in regards to your plastic surgery adventure should be getting medical clearance if it's indicated. Medical clearance is not indicated for young healthy people having minor elective procedures. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
