What are the long term effects of a BBL on the gluteus muscles?

Question

I understand that some doctors Inject fat into the gluteus muscles for better survivability of the fat. What is the long term effect of fat being injected into the glute muscles? Will it possibly cause any of the glute muscles to have undue stress on them over time or less functionality? I am asking as I am a power weight lifter with an upcoming lipo surgery date and wanted to be most informed about how a BBL might possibly negatively impact my performance or if the fat will loose shape later.

Thanks for your question. With Brazilian butt lift we transfer fat from one area of the body to the other.  These fat cells are transferred in microinjections throughout multiple planes in the buttock tissue so that they can gain new blood supply and live in their new home, providing increased volume and shape to the buttocks.  Fat is no longer injected into the muscles for safety reasons.

BBL done properly, doesn't affect the gluteal muscle. Gluteal exercise after full recovery from BBL build volume and strengths which helps in giving a firm fuller shape. 
Stay away from those surgeons who inject into the muscle as this has been proven to be dangerous and might lead to fat embolism as elegantly demonstrated in landmark study by Dr Del Vecchio.

in case of BBL surgery, fat is transferred above the muscles so it doesn't have any effect on muscles. Most patients are able to return to their daily routine within a few days. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

The great thing about this surgery is that the transformation that occurs in a couple of hours in the operating room trumps any period of time in the gym.  Having said that, lunges, squats, and other exercises that cause hypertrophy of the gluteus muscles will help the result. 
Squats and lunges after a BBL will only increase muscle bulk and definition which is probably a good thing in most patients looking to achieve a more projected, lifted buttock.  However, just make sure that the body fat percentage is held in check or you will lose some of the fat.  And do not overdo it when you return to the gym; assess tolerance as your gradually build up to what you were able to do before the BBL.

Injecting fat under the muscle is dangerous and carries many health risks. This is why no doctor should incur in this practice.

First let me dispel the myth that fat placed in the muscle has better survivability. There is no clinical evidence of this at all. The lip which is the most highly vascularized area that we insert fat has the worst survivability of fat. Surgeons confuse blood flow with survivability and this is a fallacy.

The more important reason why you should not have fat in the muscle is because it migrates through the muscle into deeper structures. We demonstrated this in a publication in Plastic Surgery that was printed Several months ago.
Due partly to this research, organized Plastic Surgery has condemned fat being placed in the muscle. In summary, no one should be putting fat in the gluteus muscle at all. Hope this helps. Best regards

Fat was once injected into the gluteus muscle to increase it's girth and tilt the pelvis, giving a curvier appearance; HOWEVER, this is now outlawed as it carries the tremendous risk of a life-threatening fat embolus. For the safety of our patients, we utilize ultrasound during our BBL's to assure that we DON'T inject any fat into the muscle of the butt.As far as viability of the grafted fat, it is dependent upon the quality of the fat harvest. If you are a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), the optimal outcomes are achieved with: 1) use of VASER liposuction to harvest the fat, 2) a closed looped system such as Puregraft to process the fat, and 3) strategic micro-packet transplant technique. These three processes have demonstrated over 95% fat graft take. This means that your results will be stable as long as you maintain your weight. As an official VASER trainer, I am routinely referred unhappy BBL patients. One of the most common reasons for disgruntled BBL patients is that patients are not able to accurately communicate their desired buttocks goals to their surgeons.  A buttocks assessment tool can be an invaluable tool to communicate to your surgeon the exact buttocks size and shape you are desiring. You are correct and that fat survivability is better and I highly vascular tissue like muscle.  If you've ever seen a prime steak then you know muscle has fat in it.  The long-term consequence is only that there is fat now in whatever area it was transferred to you and this will be consistent for the rest of your life.  If this procedure caused any known serious muscle pathology involved then we would most likely not be doing this procedure. You can continue powerlifting after an appropriate amount of time  after the procedure which will be dictated by a plastic surgeon.  Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
