Botox or lip fillers against herpes on my lips? Is this an option?

I have always had to deal with Herpes on my lips. The last two months I have not had a single day without it and now it Is starting to grow on my upper lip too. Do lip fillers kind of help against herpes? I am really frustrated.

Headey.     Sorry you are dealing with this, but Botox or fillers will not help your problem.  Consult with a board certified dermatologist for the best treatment regimen for your lip herpes. Good luck!

Lip fillers won't help improve herpes. However, you can have lip fillers with the herpes virus. It is recommended to take Valtrex both before and after treatment to help with an outbreak. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question. Botox should never be injected into the lips. However, fillers can be injected into the lips. However, they will not help against a herpes outbreak, they can actually trigger an outbreak. The only treatment for herpes is medication like Valtrex. Unfortunately herpes can only be managed as it is a lifetime diagnosis. I recommend you follow up with your doctor for treatment. Best of Luck!

Thanks for your question.  Botox is never to be injected into the lips and fillers are not to be given to anyone with active herpes infections and if you get them all the time, then perhaps you should see a board certified dermatologist and get on prophylactic herpes medication to minimize these.  Fillers do nothing to prevent the outbreaks.

If you are prone to cold sores / herpes infections around the lips, fillers will certainly not help your situation. In face, any injection in the lips can cause a breakout in people who have a tendency to get these infections, but don't have an active breakout at the time. This doesn't mean that people who get cold sores should not get lip filler, but it does mean that you should consider prophylactic treatment with valtrex after your injections. All the more so, I would not recommend doing any injections in the lips during an active breakout. The lips are sensitive enough as they are when they are not inflamed!

Neither Botox or filler will help with herpes infection (cold sores). In fact, filler injection can cause a cold sore if you have not been premedicated. I would followup with your dermatologist and consider changing or increasing the dose of your cold sore medication.

Botox or dermal fillers will not help herpes infection. In fact if someone has an active infection it would be contraindicated to inject the area.  If you decide that you want botox (in the lip lines) or dermal fillers in that area for cosmetic reasons I would suggest you be prophylaxed with an antiviral prior to the injection so as not to precipitate an outbreak.  If you are having such frequent outbreaks you should speak to your physician about changing the dosing of your medication.
