My question: Given how recessed my lower jaw is, do you think a chin implant will sit correctly? What kind of results can I expect? Also, what risks might I face as far as losing sensation in my lower face? Am I correct to assume that the risks for a chin implant are considerably less than for jaw surgery or genioplasty? I am a musician who plays a wind instrument recreationally and I don't want a high risk of losing my ability to play.
Answer: Jaw Reconstruction Consultation Without an exam your question cannot be answered. You will need to see an Oral/Maxillofacial surgeon to see if othognathic surgery, genioplasty or using an implant is best for your specific case. It should be noted that patients with severely weak jaws or abnormally functioning jaws may be better treated with other facial surgery (orthognathic surgery), although a chin augmentation may be an option at a later time. These patients should seek the advice of a plastic surgeon to determine which course is right for them. Here is some information to help you make this decision: Candidates for Chin Augmentation - Patients whose chin profiles are weak but have normally functioning jaws are candidates for Chin Augmentation. Many of these candidates have used injectable fillers in the past to strengthen the protrusion of their chins, but are looking for a permanent solution. If you are one of these patients, then you are a likely candidate for chin augmentation

Answer: Chin Implant You are an excellent candidate for a chin implant! I would like to remind you that if you're hesitant about having surgical chin implantation, a non-surgical option is available to you, via injection of Radiesse by a specialist dermatologist or plastic surgeon. The substance is made of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals which mimic bone almost identically. The procedure is painless and instant, and is a fraction of the cost of a surgical implant (though it lasts approximately 8 months). Even if you one day plan nf having a surgical implant, the Radiesse version is a good "trial run," allowing you to customize just how you want your chin to look in real time without relying on a doctor to perform a chin augmentation for you while you're under anesthesia, unable to guide the process. Best of luck to yoU!Sincerely yours,Dr. Cameron Rokhsar and Molly Murray, PA-C

Answer: Chin implant candidate When a recessive chin is present, a chin implant is an excellent alternative to augment the chin. Chin implants are manufactured in a variety of sizes and shapes which is best determined at the time of examination and consultation, since the chin is a three-dimensional structure. Chin implants are composed of Silastic, are inserted through a sub mental approach under local anesthesia as an out patient surgical procedure. For many examples, please see the link and the video below

Answer: Chin Implant Candidate Dear Snowbaby, Yes you are an excellent candidate for chin augmentation. Chin augmentation will bring more projection of the chin aligning your features and allowing for a more balanced profile. A chin implant is much easier then a genioplasty and has a very quick recovery rate. I perform a lot of chin augmentation procedures and when placed properly you should have no permanent loss of sensation in your lower face. As a musician you should not have any complications that will lead to your inability to play your wind instrument. However you will have some restrictions in playing during the beginning healing process. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.
