Had a full tt and mr 12 weeks ago. This week noticed a bulge and separation from belly button down. Surgeon confirmed this but is not keen to fix due to weak tissue and thinks it might happen again. He said if it spreads further he can do a mesh repair which I’m not keen on. Is it another big operation to go back in to fix? As big as tummy tuck? Unsure what to do. Should I see someone else?

Hi thanks for your question. It is unusual to get separation of your muscles this early on and if it has occurred it could be due to weak tissues. What your surgeon is suggesting is reasonable - I would wait for as long as possible to know what is the end point (ie will it get worse), rather than jumping into another surgery so soon. It is possible you will need to have it re-repaired with mesh and that is an appropriate suggestion. This would involve reopening your scar and tightening the muscles - if its just below the belly button then just this area needs to be opened, otherwise the surgeon needs to go above the belly button as well and the procedure becomes close to a full tummy tuck. Wait and see, and be patient. Hope this helps.
