Does Renuvion just tighten skin and/or actually remove excess skin long term?

Hi tabby_79,Thank you for your question.  I have not had to repeat Renuvion in the same patient yet.  Since the mechanisms involve contracting the fibrous bands under the skin as well as the undersurface of the skin (deep dermis tissue), it may be reasonable to repeat after the initial improvements are stable (after 6 months) but I expect that there will be less improvements as there is a finite amount of overall tightening that can be achieved. There is no "removal" of skin (excision surgically is the only way) but yes there appears to be less surface area. Best wishes. Dr. Doolabh

Plastic surgery continues to evolve as technology continues to improve and this leads to increasing effectiveness and overall treatment options for patients.  One new frontier in plastic surgery is skin tightening, while this is not new, there are some significant advancements that have been made that have led to improved treatments for patients.  One of these innovations is a device called Renuvion, it was also called J-Plasma before it was redesigned specifically for aesthetic treatments. 

Renuvion (J-Plasma) is a radiofrequency energy device that also combines helium to induce skin tightening.  The device includes a cannula that is placed under the skin (similar to a liposuction cannula) which allows higher amounts of energy as it avoids the concern for trauma to the superficial skin.  The second unique feature of the Renuvion is the addition of the helium, the combination allows for the radiofrequency energy to heat the skin quickly and almost instantaneously be cooled to increase the safety of the device.  It also allows for a more efficient treatment, which is important when combining the treatment with other larger body contouring surgeries such as a Brazilian Butt Lift. 

In my practice Renuvion (J-Plasma) is most commonly used in combination with liposculpting procedures such as a Brazilian Butt Lift.  It can also be used in the neck in combination with liposuction for patients that want to improve their appearance, but are not ready for a necklift yet.  Liposuction is an incredible way to enhance the shape of the body or neck, however a patient’s results are dependent on the skin to contract.  In patient with loose skin or stretch marks there will likely be a limit to the skin contracture after liposuction, thus limiting the overall results of the procedure.  However, if we can remove the fat and tighten the skin simultaneously we have opened up the procedure to patients that were not previously a candidate for liposuction. 

It is important to know that Renuvion (J-Plasma) is not a replacement for a tummy tuck, neck lift or other surgical procedure that removes excess skin.  However, it is a great option for patients who are not ready or don’t need these larger procedures, but have some loose skin that will not be treated with liposuction.

Renuvion work best in conjunction with liposuction. When we perform liposuction, we can scrape the undersurface of the skin which causes mild scar formation under the skin which will create a retraction. The Renuvion can target the fibrous connective tissue within the fat and cause these to shorten, causing further retraction. Renuvion can be performed again but you will typically the most significant results the first time around.

Renuvion J Plasma is solely a skin tightening treatment, it does not remove excess skin. The only way to remove excess skin is to surgically remove it by cutting it off, hence doing some sort of a lift or tuck. Yes, Renuvion J Plasma can be done multiple times in the same area until you have achieved your desired result. The treatments should be spaced nine to twelve months apart to allow for full healing and retraction of the skin

Thank you for sharing your question. My patients and I love the results of Renuvion as it tightens the skin, giving a more youthful look to the patient. Renuvion works by tightening the skin from the inside by heating it until it shrinks, but it will not remove excess skin (only surgery can do it). You want to be careful about multiple treatments as it can potentially burn your skin, but if done correctly, you will see beautiful and long lasting results. Talk to a board certified plastic surgeon who will assess your options with you. 

Hello, Thanks for your question. Renuvion is an excellent tool to help skin tightening and contraction. Plasma energy is used to help the underlying fascia, connective tissue and skin contract. Time for optimal results is 6-9 months. I do about 20 renuvion treatments per month paired with liposuction.

I am currently using Renuvion/Jplasma technology for skin tightening and getting great results. This is an excellent device for tightening the skin of the tummy, arms, neck, and thighs avoiding a scar from removal of skin altogether in the right candidate. I have done a second treatment for additional skin tightening. I would recommend a consultation with a plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic surgery and has extensive experience in body contouring.

Thank you for your question. I have been using Renuvion for over 2 years now and use it on almost all of my liposuction cases. Renuvion is a terrific device for tissue tightening. It does have its limitations however and not all patients are candidates for this procedure. I have found Renuvion to improve the outcomes in the following ways:Tightening of the fibril-septal network. This is the lattice of connective tissue that the fat cells were connected to prior to their removal with liposuction. When treated with Renuvion, this network shrinks pulling the tissue tighter.Stimulation of new collagen in the skin. This is a result that continues to improve for 6 to 12 months resulting in firmer, tighter skin. I perform a second liposuction aspiration following Renuvion and typically remove an additional 50 to 75% more fat as a result of the Renuvion's effects on the remaining fat.Patients tend to have a quicker recovery following Renuvion than when I use Tickle Lipo alone.To date, I have not performed a second Renuvion procedure on the same area as it has not been necessary.
