What is the best sunscreen to protect my facelift scars from sun exposure?

Hello, thank you for your question. You are absolutely right in knowing that sun screen and sun protection is very important for scars. I would suggest using spf 40 or greater, apply 20 mins prior to sun exposure and reapply every 4 hours. Continue to use the hat and get shade as well.

I would recommend a sunscreen with titanium dioxide/zinc oxide with SPF greater than 35 starting 1 week after surgery.

For the first six months after surgery, we advise patients to limit their exposure to the sun. In addition to wearing your hat while you're on vacation, you should opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 that offers UVA and UVB protection in order to prevent your scar from darkening. The Biocorneum Scar Treatment solution contains SPF 30, which shields your skin from UV rays. Additionally, it can soften already-existing elevated hypertrophic scars, flattening them, and reducing redness or other discolorations. However, we would advise you to consult with your original surgeon for their recommendations for your scar care.

Hello @fit4life21, thank you for your question. Even with sunscreen, it is ideal not to expose the area to direct sunlight. Physical barriers such as hats are recommended, as well as covering with micropores if possible. This assumes you apply sunscreen every day, at least 3 times a day. Best wishes! My facelift patients can use sunblock one the wounds are completely healed. I usually recommend a mineral sunscreen (physical blocker) and a brand we carry is Skinceuticals.

I would recommend a mineral/physical sunscreen, it is best for sensitive skin. I'd also suggest wearing a hat to help shade the face.

I recommend a metallic (reflective) sunblock rather than an absorptive block. This means either Titanium Dioxide or Zink Oxide or both in the sunblock. We use Colorscience for our patients.
