Do I need to stop birth control?

I am a 24 year old healthy female who is going in for vaser liposuction on my chin, the procedure will take less than an hour and I am on the birth control pill cerazette which is a progestogen only pill and have been told I need to stop taking it 2 weeks before my surgery, I have been on this pill for 4 years now and if I stop it my hormones will mess up again, do I really need to stop taking it?

I see no reason to stop birth control pills in anticipation of such a minor procedure is liposuction of the neck. Nevertheless this is a question best addressed to your own surgeon.

In our practice, you do not need to stop taking your OCP meds prior to your surgery. We advise patients to avoid taking blood thinners unless there is a medical need and a low surgical risk. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Los Angeles

Thank you for your question. For an isolated procedure such as this, done in the office under local anesthesia, I would not typically require that patients hold their OCP's. For more elaborate procedures under general anesthesia, and where early ambulation might be hard, it is a consideration to hold those medications due to increased DVT risks. In our practice, we do not stop birth control pills prior to any elective cosmetic surgery. It's very important that patients are not pregnant and having cosmetic surgery performed at the same time. Birth control pills should not affect the surgical process of healing, but always check with your operative surgeon
