Liposuction versus neck lift. It may be helpful to clarify some terminology. A neck lift, and a facelift is often considered the same procedure. There are versions of a neck lift where the incisions are under the chin and in this case, the neck lift is different. If the incision is around the ear, then it is in essence a facelift. As patient get older, their candidacy for Liposuction goes down and their candidacy for a facelift increases. There’s no absolute number but I would say at age 50 most patients are not good candidates for Liposuction and begin to be much better candidates for a facelift. Patients in their 20s and 30s should generally not get facelift surgery though there are exceptions. A facelift addresses, skin laxity, subcutaneous, fat, and dit my muscle. Liposuction only addresses subcutaneous fat. Individuals who have a double chin typically do not have an abnormal fat distribution. The double chin is almost always exclusively related to the shape and size of the mandible. Liposuction may be appropriate, but understand a well-done neck lift a.k.a. facelift would probably give you a better result, but with the drawbacks of the procedure. That said, delivering consistent quality Liposuction is more difficult than most people realize. Only exceptional plastic surgeons deliver exceptional outcomes. Average plastic surgeons deliver average outcomes. Average Liposuction results may look undesirable. Doing this procedure well is much more difficult than most people realize. Some plastic surgeons think Liposuction is a simplistic procedure, which it is not. Provider selection is probably more important than what procedure you choose. To find the right provider, I suggest having multiple in person consultations. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their portfolio And show you their entire collection of before and after pictures of previous patients who had similar facial characteristics to your own. Bring a set of printed proper facial pictures to use as reference during the consultation. Highly experienced providers should have more before and after pictures than you have time to look at during the consultation. Make sure they’re showing you examples of patients who have very similar facial characteristics to your own. Being just a handful of examples or examples of patients who don’t have similar characteristics to your own, may be a red flag to continue your search. There’s not a correct number of consultations needed to find the right provider. The more consultations you scheduled the more likely you are to find the better provider for your needs. The biggest mistake I see patients make is having only one consultation and then scheduling surgery. Poor done Liposuction can be permanently disfiguring. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD.
