Hi Docs! I’m looking into removing my silicone implant due to unforeseen anxiety I’ve developed regarding having an implant in my face. My question is, based on me being 23 and having had this medium implant in for less than a year, can I expect my chin to return to its original pre-op state? I’m not expecting an 100% return to normal, but am nervous about having my skin sag post removal. Is recovery time and swelling the same as putting in an implant?

Answer: Chin implant removal The earlier an implant is removed the more likely that the chin will return to its previous pre-surgical condition. There is a chance that the soft tissue will not be the same as the implant has been in for a year. If you are happy with the horizontal projection and only concerned about the silicone, why don't you exchange the implant for a genioplasty? A sliding genioplasty moves your own bone forward and the muscles and soft tissue adapts. The procedure is performed in the office with sedation anesthesia and the removal and genioplasty are performed simultaneously and takes about an hour. Most young people recover in 3-5 days and the surgery does not affect your bite or eating.
