Nostrils to narrow after rhinoplasty. Can these be widened?

Hi Doctors, I had bad rhinoplasty. My nose is now to small and nostrils too narrow. I know that there are techniques to argument the length of the nose. But can nostrils became wider again? There is not too much info about that. Thanks.

Hello, thank you for the question and provided information. A revision rhinoplasty can be performed to improved the failed rhinoplasty's result and to widen the nose graft materials are used and yes, for the nostrils cartilage is utilised and they widen. The recovery process needs to be completed to undergo a revision rhinoplasty that requires at least one year long.Best Regards,

However, the nose needs ample time to heal from the first surgery before undergoing a second to ensure a successful revision. I advise patients to wait a full year before undergoing another procedure. At that time, make sure you meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in revision rhinoplasty to ensure an optimal outcome.

Nostrils can be widened but the scarring afterwards usually looks worse than the original nose.  Composite grafts usually need to be added.  Sometimes, cartilage grafts can be added to the existing nostrils to make the nose appear wider.  Visit with a facial specialist in your area and determine your options from there.

You can certainly widen the nostrils through several techniques.  However, I think you need to consider the overall result and decide if nostril widening is the only issue.  Please understand that you want to get it right on the next go.  After that, it can become problematic.

It is possible to widen the nostrils following rhinoplasty. The technique used depends on why the nostrils are collapsed. Nostril widening is possible using composite ear cartilage grafts. However, maintaining proportionality with the rest of your nose is key. You must understand that changing the proportions in the way in which you desire may unmask a different problem. This is a visual effect. A properly done rhinoplasty takes into account the correct aesthetic proportionality of the nose. Changing a single element is not always a good idea without a good comprehensive plan and a list of maneuvers needed to achieve your results. In my experience, rhinoplasties are not necessarily procedures that can be done "freestyle". Of course, without a set of photos or a consultation, it is difficult to tell you the specifics of how to achieve your desired result and to inform you of the pitfalls of any one approach. The nostrils can be widened after rhinoplasty but the technique and results vary depending on the location of the narrowing. If the nostril rims are collapsed, which can occur if too much tip cartilage was removed, cartilage grafts can be placed to open the nostrils and improve breathing. If the base of your nose is narrow, skin grafts must be used; I do not recommend this except in extreme cases because the grafts will be easily seen.
