As a male my arms are muscular but there's some fat. Some Drs say they'll lipo for more definition. Others say no. Why? (Photo)

I did 2 of these procedures this week.  If the physician doesn't have experience in doing arm contouring of course they will say its not worth it.  You need an examination to see if you are even a candidate.  It apperars from this picture that you have separation between the deltoids, triceps and biceps insertions so its hard to tell if more definition is possible.  An energy based device would be most beneficial and the use of micro, multi-hole cannulas superficially to create shadows and etches where you are looking to obtain more definition.  Adding fat to the shoulders will help make this look more pronounced.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Your arms can be better defined with VASER liposuction. It is not a fat reduction, as in most women's arms, but muscle definition. I prefer to define the deltoid, triceps and sometimes the lower biceps area. The surgeons who say that you "fail" the pinch test, certainly are not familiar with VASER Hi Def liposuction to define the static and dynamic muscle anatomy. It's difficult to tell if you are a good liposuction candidate through picture, but other factors contribute to your surgeons decision such as skin quality, the amount of fat beneath the skin, and the elasticity of the skin. From the photographs I can't tell you anything but if you pinch the skin of the arm and there is an inch or greater between your two fingers liposuction might be of benefit. If not any contour issue is not a problem surplus fat.

Congratulations of your weight loss.  Agree, the pinch test is the traditional method to determine if you are a liposuction candidate.   The presence of loose skin does play an important factor.   Regardless, on properly selected candidates, liposuction can be successfully performed on the arms of both men and women.   In all honesty, trust the medical opinions that have been provided... "most... of them think that it's not worth getting... arms done."   These physicians are providing their expert medical advice.   

Women and men typically have different fat distributions.This is generally due to a combination of genetics and hormonal balance.Men typically do not have thick layers of subcutaneous fat on their arms.I have performed over 2,000 liposuction procedures.I don't think I have done male arm liposuction to date.If most doctors are not willing to do liposuction of your arms, then the one who is willing to is the outlier.Most plastic surgeons like to operate, and certainly the great majority like making money.I would put more credence in the ones who say don't have liposuction on your arms.When you pinch the skin, you're pinching two layers of fat and two layers of skin.My best guess is your subcutaneous fat is 1/4 of an inch on your arms at most.Never forget that there are inherent risks involved, including bad outcomes and disfigurements.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.

Because there is relatively very little fat, liposuction of that area has an extremely high chance of causing skin irregularities and if that happens you will never get back a smooth surface, so the risk outweighs the reward.
