Will liposuction get rid of my 'hanging stomach'? (Photo)

Great question!  This is probably one of the most often asked questions on body contouring.   I always explain to patients that there are 2 issues when it comes to body contouring - volume and skin.  Liposuction only treats the volume (fatty tissue) and does not treat the skin.  Sometimes liposuction only can leave even more loose skin.  A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty, is the treatment to remove the excess skin and tighten the abdominal region.  So if the loose skin bothers you, then a tummy tuck procedure is the best treatment for you.  However, the best recommendation can only be provided after an in-person consultation so that an appropriate physical examination can be performed and the options explained to you

Thank you for your question and photo. Your concern is the "hanging stomach". Liposuction is used to get rid of stubborn fat but will not address the loose skin. In your case a tummy tuck will give you the results I believe you are looking for. However you stated you are not wanting a tummy tuck yet and you are young and could want more children in the future so it may be best to wait until you are done having kids. Have a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine your goals and what they suggest. Hope this helps,Dr. Newall 

The hard part was loosing the weight, which you have already done. Congrats. The most important next step is the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) with liposuction. If you just do liposuction, you will likely be greatly dissatisfied but he remaining hanging skin. See your local board certified plastic surgeon for a personal consultation.

The procedure that would get rid of the excess fat and skin for the abdomen is a tummy tuck. Tummy tuck, also know as abdominoplasty, is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen and to restore the weakened abdominal wall, giving a firmer and smoother appearance.  
We nearly always add liposuction to our tummy tucks to sculpt the body 360 degrees to achieve an ideal feminine figure.  Tummy tuck is a very powerful technique in the right hands, and can have dramatic results if done correctly.  You definitely have to choose your surgeon correctly and make sure that he/she has the training and experience to meet your goals with absolute safety.  Don’t settle for less than a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with specialized expertise in this procedure.

Hello,Although a physical examination would confirm, your photo depicts very loose and deflated abdominal skin. Liposuction would cause further deflation beyond the point of skin elasticity or 'spring back'. Despite other doctors' suggestions, auxiliary maneuvers like laser, Vaser, or ultrasound have not been proven to clinically 'tighten' skin in any meaningful way. Careful studies have shown that they can make two tattoo marks come closer together than liposuction alone by millimeters; this is hardly going to affect your skin excess, which is likely going to be 6 to 8 inches in the vertical vector at the midline. Young and unmarried women who haven't had children have done very well with an abdominoplasty, and gone on to become married with children. Alternatively, you could have liposuction knowing that you have an abdominoplasty as a back up if you are unsatisfied. Go visit a few ABPS certified/ASAPS member surgeons who specialize in body contouring. Best of luck! 

A tummy tuck is the best way to flatten and tighten your stomach. If you're not willing to consider that option now, then liposuction alone would likely produce improvements in some ways. Your stomach would become flatter, and the overhanging roll would likely become less prominent. You do have excess skin, so the skin would still be loose after liposuction alone. The fact that you're so young is in your favor, since your skin may have better ability to tighten after liposuction than the skin of an older patient. To sum it up, a tummy tuck would do the most for you, in exchange for a scar that would be hidden by most underwear or swimsuits, but liposuction could still provide some benefits for you. If your stomach is less thick and prominent after the liposuction, but the skin doesn't tighten enough to your satisfaction, you could always do a tummy tuck in the future!

Concerns about the appearance of the abdomen are very common among patients consulting with a plastic surgeon. Just like every patient is different…so too is every abdomen. Different problems require different solutions. Your board certified plastic surgeon is uniquely trained to identify the problems as well as the appropriate solution.
The abdomen is commonly addressed via liposuction or abdominoplasty (“tummy – tuck”). Which procedure is best is dependent upon the source of the problem. 
Excess fat deposits underneath the skin can be addressed via liposuction. Liposuction will not address any other issues and may worsen the situation if there are other factors at play (such as skin excess and muscle laxity, see below)
Commonly patients concerns are centered around issues of excess skin as well as fat. A third factor, which is often overlooked by most patients is abdominal wall muscle laxity (typically seen in post partum mommies).  The tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to eliminate excess skin and fat and tighten the muscles in the abdominal wall to create a smoother and slimmer contour. The tummy tuck is designed to target areas of the abdomen that have not responded to diet and exercise, making it particularly popular among people that have a lot of loose or sagging skin around the abdominal area due to significant weight loss, as well as women with excess skin and stretched abdominal muscles following pregnancy and childbirth. 
Candidates for tummy tuck should be already at or near their ideal weight for optimal results. It is recommended to women that are planning on becoming pregnant to postpone the procedure until they are finished having children.
Based upon your photos, you are likely to gain the maximal benefit from abdominoplasty. Liposuction is dependent upon the inherent tonicity/elasticity of the skin. Stretch marks are the hallmark of skin which has lost this tone. You appear to have skin excess in addition to excess fat under the skin (but you are young which is a plus). Liposuction, alone, may worsen the sagging. You might be a candidate for limited/conservative liposuction (so as to mitigate the risk of worsening your skin issues), as long as you understand you may ultimately need/want skin excision.

You appear to be a candidate for a tummy tuck which can be performed at the same time as a hi definition procedure. For best results, I recommend a hi definition procedure like VASER liposuction. I use VASER HI DEF with ThermRF and fat grafting to get the most fat removal, skin tightening, contour and definition. This combination will give you the flattest, most toned result. Liposuction will definitely get rid of much of the fat in your stomach area, however, depending on the elasticity of your skin will determine how much it will contract. If you end up unhappy with too much hanging skin, you could have the extra skin excised. Good luck.
