Dear Professional: For both better breathing and aesthetics, is it possible to enlarge the nostrils so as to make them look both larger and wider, similar to the characteristics of an African nose?
Answer: Enlarging nostrils Nostril size can be increased by using composite grafts at the base of the nostrils near the nasal sill. Typically only a few mm graft is necessary for a dramatic improvement. If breathing is the problem, cartilage grafts may be needed to support the nostril opening.

Answer: Enlarging your nostrils Making nostrils smaller is pretty straightforward. Making them agree, however, is quite complicated and less reliable. If you are having breathing problems, you should make sure that there isn't another problem like a deviated septum causing your problem.

Answer: Is it possible to enlarge the nostrils for better breathing and looks? Dear Petrsen1128The nasal base can be widened and nostril shape can be modified, however, chances are that in itself wont help you breathe better. usually breathing is limited by the internal nasal valve and not the nostrils. Photographs and preferably an in person exam can help give you more information.

Dear Petrsen1128, Yes this is possible however if you have never had a rhinoplasty where there has been any collapse of the nostrils most breathing problems are fixed with other procedures. Most patients do not enlarge their nostrils for better breathing function. During consultation and examination a proper diagnosis will be made for your breathing restrictions and then a surgical plan is devised to address these concerns. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.
