Is it possible to enlarge the nostrils for better breathing and looks?

Dear Professional: For both better breathing and aesthetics, is it possible to enlarge the nostrils so as to make them look both larger and wider, similar to the characteristics of an African nose?

Nostril size can be increased by using composite grafts at the base of the nostrils near the nasal sill.  Typically only a few mm graft is necessary for a dramatic improvement.  If breathing is the problem, cartilage grafts may be needed to support the nostril opening.

Making nostrils smaller is pretty straightforward.  Making them agree, however, is quite complicated and less reliable.  If you are having breathing problems, you should make sure that there isn't another problem like a deviated septum causing your problem.

Dear Petrsen1128The nasal base can be widened and nostril shape can be modified, however, chances are that in itself wont help you breathe better. usually breathing is limited by the internal nasal valve and not the nostrils. Photographs and preferably an in person exam can help give you more information.

There are definitely procedures available
for enlarging the nostrils. Sometime the nostrils are too small because of a
birth deformity (such as a cleft lip) and sometimes from trauma, burns, or
previous surgery. Several techniques are available to enlarge the nostrils, including
composite grafts and flaps. The treatment should be individualized to meet your particular
needs. Please consult with a surgeon experienced in reconstructive nasal surgery.

Dear Petrsen1128, Yes this is possible however if you have never had a rhinoplasty where there has been any collapse of the nostrils most breathing problems are fixed with other procedures. Most patients do not enlarge their nostrils for better breathing function. Some patients have inadequate cartilage support of their nostrils (external nasal valves) that causes obstruction, however most patients have other sources of airflow restriction within their nose.  Some do suffer from nostril collapse with inspiration after an 
overly aggressive rhinoplasty and will respond to cartilage grafting.You will need evaluation by a competent Bd. Certified plastic or head and neck surgeon to discuss your options.
