Is it normal to be depressed about my smartlipo? I'm 5 days post op and I wake up in the middle of the night crying about my results, which aren't bad, I am just only 19 and I feel like I screwed up my body for good.. I was skinny before lipo. I was just greedy. Now I am 10 pounds heavier I don't want to leave the house and I'm constantly stressed about living the rest of my life with lipo. I read all of these horrible blogs saying lipo ruined their health and other horrible things so I'm scared

Answer: Depressed about SmartLipo SmartLipo should not be considered part of a weight loss program. If you are 10 pounds heavier, then you are gaining weight just like the other 65% of Americans who are gaining excess weight. Instead of being depressed, do something about your weight. Most of my patients feel so much better about themselves when they lose their weight, and they look better too.Losing weight is not easy for most people who are overweight. A lot depends on you and your personality type, lifestyle, metabolism, and attitude. If you want to learn how to lose weight and keep it off for the rest of your life, you should do a program that encompasses all these aspects. Three main aspects for losing weight are eating right, exercising adequately, and getting support regularly. A restricted diet is necessary, such as < 1000 cals/day. Limit carbs such as sweets, breads, pastas; make sure you eat enough protein, at least 50 gm/day; eat lots of vegetables and some low glycemic fruits; some nuts and oils, such as olive oil. Exercise regularly, every day if you can, with good vigorous activities. See a diet counselor or physician at least every other week; if you have a support person, use them. For further information on my plan, The True Diet, go to my website. I also utilize methods to change your metabolism, to make sure hormones are optimized, to lower inflammation, and much more. It’s not just calories in should be less than calories out. Good Luck.

Answer: It is not normal to be depressed about your smartlipo! In my experience, being depressed, especially 5 days after SmartLipo is not normal. I would advise you to get counseling or seek a mental health professional to help you get this under control. I operated on three nieces over thirty years ago and their problem fat is still gone. By removing fat that is out of proportion with your normal body, you can actually be doing a good thing for your body. I have had my personal RN employee who was an insulin dependent diabetic, become non-insulin dependent. I have seen many patients with their cholesterol lowered through lipo. Once you are 6-8 weeks down the road you should feel better about your procedure, but don't delay about getting immediate help for your depression and establishing a support system for getting you through this difficult period.Dr. Seare
