How long do I have to wait after a breast augmentation to submerge myself in sea water?

Thanks for your question! If you were my patient, I would say no. I prefer my patients not "submerge" their fresh incision until I have cleared them at 3 weeks post-op. That being said, every plastic surgeon is different so I would reach out to yours specifically and see what he says. Good luck!

Congratulations on your recent surgery.  I advise my patients to not swim in rivers, lakes, oceans, or public pools for at least 3 weeks after a procedure.  This all depends of course how well the patient has recovered and the integrity of the skin incision.  Follow your specific instructions from your plastic surgeon as to not compromise your result.  Good luck.

Hello,Thank you for your question. I allow my BA patients to swim and bath after 2 weeks, as long as the incisions are completely closed. I recommend that you check with your plastic surgeon to check  that you are healed and safe to resume these activities.All the best

If you were my patient I would say no, I usually make my patients wait until the incisions are fully clsoed and healed which is usually around the 4-6 week mark pending their healing status. But every plastic surgeon is different and may have different rules.  I recommend you call the office and ask directly your plastic surgeon.  I would allow your body to heal, no need to rush.  Congrats on the breast augmentation! :) Here's to a healthy recovery and healing!

Thank your for your question. Every surgeon will have his/her own preferences as to recovery for specific procedures.  I have patients wear a soft bra after breast augmentation for 3 to 4 weeks to splint everything, and at that point the scars are generally very stable. Best is to wait after this time when everything has healed to get in the sea water. That said, the best person to advice you will be your specific surgeon. Good luck!

on what your surgeon says, if all goes as planned most surgeons would say to stay out of water for 2 weeks, however some also dont let their patients shower for multiple days post-op

Follow your PS's post-operative guidelines as he/she will know if how you are recovering.  All of the incisions should be well healed before contemplating exposure of your breasts to salt water.  You generally need at least 6 weeks before a venture such as this.  If you position yourself away from the water and wear a swim tee rash guard shirt, you should be fine.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA
