Gynecomastiasurgery involves removing fat and varying amounts of breast tissue from theovergrown male breasts. When this is performed, there is a very significantimmediate change in the contour of the chest. There is always some swelling andbruising after any surgery that takes a few months to resolve, but you shouldsee improvement in shape even at your first dressing change the day aftersurgery. That is why gynecomastia surgery is usually very rewarding topatients. You can tell from the beginning, your contour will be corrected. Typically, swelling is gone by about 3 months post-op but this can vary a lot from onepatient to another and in some cases, patients may even see some subtleswelling as up to 6-8 months out, and scar tissue can soften for even 12-18months. Early compression and restriction of activity can make the swellingmobilize faster, and scar massage after early healing is done (3-4 weeks) canhelp scars mature faster. Generally the more tissue that has to be removed, thelonger the healing may take.
Following surgery, your incisions will go through a maturation process. For the first few months they will be red and possibly raised and/or firm. As the scar matures, after 6-12 months, it becomes soft, pale, flat, and much less noticeable. You may experience numbness, tingling, burning, “crawling”, or other peculiar sensations around the surgical area. This is a result of the healing of tiny fibers which are trapped in the incision site. These symptoms will disappear. Some people are prone to keloids, which is an abnormal scar that becomes prominent. If you or a blood relative has a tendency to keloid formation, please inform the doctor.Bruising and #swelling are normal and usually increase slightly after the removal of any tape or foam. The bruising will decrease over 3-4 weeks, but may last as long as 6 weeks. The majority of the swelling will be gone within the first 3-4 weeks. However, it may take 6-9 weeks to disappear completely. Also, as you heal, the area may feel “lumpy” and irregular. This, too, decreases with time, and massaging these areas will help soften the scar tissue. The #compression garment helps reduce the swelling, and the longer it is worn, the more quickly you will #heal. It can also assist in the retraction of the skin. If you have any concerns about #healing, its best to ask questions of your surgeon or their nursing staff.

Be sure to follow your surgeon’spost-operative instructions carefully to maximize your results and contact or visit their office shouldhave any questions or concerns.
Hello! Thank you for the question! It is common for swelling to persist for 6-12 weeks postoperatively after any surgical procedure. Swelling will gradually resolve after a few weeks up to this amount of time. If you have liposuction performed with your gynecomastia procedure, I would expect an even longer period for full resolution and to see final results. This along with scarring sometimes takes up to 6-12 months to see your final result. But, with this type of procedure, you can see results almost immediately, which will continue to improve over the next several months.Best wishes for an excellent result!
