Rhinoplasty & Factor 5 Leiden?

I'm hoping to go forward with rhinoplasty within the next month or so. I would just like to know if anyone can relate to worries. I have been diagnosed with Factor 5 Leiden deficiency. I am heterozygous - no history of a DVT or PE. I successfully carried two children to term and was prescribed heparin 9 months post birth. Will I be able to have this procedure done? Am I putting myself at risk? Advice would be much appreciated.

Rhinoplasty surgery can be performed under both general and local anesthesia with some sedation.  With the comorbidity of Factor V, a recommendation by your hematologist is in order.  The use of sequential compression devices, proper positioning, and early ambulation should make this operation a possibility for you

It is best to get medical clearance from your hematologist so that they can customize the treatment plan according to your specific issues with your surgeon. In our practice we  use sequential compression devices during the procedure to prevent a DVD or a PE. Being heterozygous is helpful, and the procedure should only last an  hour and a half. We have operated on many patients with factor five, and there's always that small risk which has to be accepted by the patient

The recommendations for patients heterozygous for Factor V Leiden are always changing, and therefore I would suggest you have your Facial Plastic Surgeon discuss your care with your Hematologist about this.  This discussion would enable both doctors to come up with a personalized plan for your care, which should put everyone at ease.  Good luck!
