Is this normal after juvederm fillers? (Photos)

Question

I had 1ml of juvaderm ultra in my lips on Friday. All was fine until I woke up on Saturday looking like this.Iv been taking paracetamol and icing it most of the day and it's now Sunday and I still don't see much of a change. When should I start to panic ?! I contacted the place and they said it looks like I may of had a little bit of a reaction and to take painkillers and ice it and it will get better. Iv had filler before and I had a small amount of swelling butter not this much.

There can be some swelling after lip injections which can last 1-2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 mins a time, in order to help decrease swelling. If you're unhappy with your final results you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Hello.  Lips can sometimes get quite swollen after lip injections, though if done well, the swelling should last a couple of days.  You can try using ice, arnica Montana, or drinking some pineapple juice to help reduce the swelling faster.  The best advice is to see the doctor that injected you for in office exam and confirm there is nothing else going on.  Hang in there!

Hello, Thank you for your question and picture. Swelling is very normal after lip injections. It's best to wait it out a couple of days. Try to avoid salt, alcohol, and exercise until the swelling subsides, these things can increase swelling. If you are having discomfort, or the swelling doesn't subside after a couple of days, it may be best to go back to your doctor. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing your question and photographs.  Due to the thin tissues of the lips they are prone to significant swelling after injections   I know waiting is difficult but allow your results time to mature over the next several days.  In the meantime you can minimize the swelling with cold compresses, antiinflammatories, arnica montana, bromelain, and with keeping your head elevated while you sleep with an extra pillow or two behind you back. Hope this helps.

The lips are particularly vulnerable to swelling. For now, as hard as it is, be patient and continue icing your lips. Also, try keeping your head above your heart when you lie down. If, after 2 weeks, you are still looking like this then see your injector.

Swelling after lip injections is common and can persist up to two weeks.  Icing the area and keeping your head above the level of your heart should help.  If after two weeks you still have concerns, return to your injector for an evaluation.

Thank you for your question and for submitting your photos.  The lips are a sensitive area, and are particularly prone to swelling that can last up to 2 weeks after filler injections.  It's difficult to assess what your final results will be until your swelling have fully subsided.  
For now, I would suggest gently applying ice or cool compresses to your lips.  I also find that taking over-the-counter antihistamines like Zyrtec or Benadryl can help with swelling after fillers.  If you are still concerned about the appearance of your lips after 2 weeks or so, it would be worthwhile to follow-up with your injector to discuss your concerns.  If necessary, Juvederm can easily be dissolved with hyaluronidase.  Best of luck!
