Got 1ml juvaderm lip fillers 2 days ago, an immediate bruise which is now black is this normal? (photos)

The professional said she didn't hit a blood vessel but I think she did? Really painful in the one area and my lip immediately bruised before even leaving the room where I had my injections done, I'm aware you need to wait time but this bruising shouldn't be so severe already? The bruise seems to have got smaller but darker. Lips have also become so dry the skin forms a white line across the lips when they don't have Vaseline on, should I get another opinion or leave the bruise to settle?

Hello, Thank you for your question. Bruising is normal, especially in the lips. The doctor may be able to treat the bruise with some laser once the color fades a bit, and this will fade the bruise quicker. Good luck!

Yes, your injector injected into the blood vessel or through the vessel. Everything you have stated follows the timeline of this complication. The fact your injector did not recognize this immediately is not reassuring in the lack knowledge of injections and the minimizing and avoidance of complications that occur. I hope you were followed up on this immediately. I hope you are healing nicely.

The lips are particularly sensitive and susceptible to bruising. You could try taking Arnica to see if that speeds up the process and if the pain doesn't subside, I would suggest that you see your injector to be evaluated in person. Best of luck.

Thank you for your question and for submitting your photo.  The lips are a sensitive area, and are prone to swelling and bruising after any filler injections for up to 2 weeks.  That said, while I can't make an exact diagnosis without assessing you in-person, the pain you're experiencing and the whitish discoloration of the skin above your lip are concerning for possible vascular occlusion.  This can occur when fillers are injected in such a way that they block the blood supply to the skin.  If untreated, this can cause permanent damage to the skin.  While this may just be severe bruising, I think it would be best to follow-up with your dermatologist or plastic surgeon immediately to discuss your concerns.  I hope you feel better soon.

The lips are a very sensitive and vascular area.  Bruising is common after lip injections and can last up to two weeks.  You may want to try the supplement Arnica to help with the bruising.  If you still have concerns return to your injector for an evaluation.

Thank you for your question courtx. I understand your concern. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler designed to enhance the
appearance of the face. With any injection there is a possibility of bruising. This typically lasts up to 2 weeks and can be treated with a laser. If the product is inadvertently injected into a vessel it could compromise a blood vessel and impede blood supply to the surrounding area. This may results in necrosis and scarring. If these cases are treated early by dissolving the product severe sequelae can be avoided. I tell my patients that if they have severe pain at rest to return to the office immediately for evaluation .Please consult with a doctor for specific recommendations. Good luck!

Hi There Thank you for your question and photographs.Without a doubt a blood vessel has been punctured  but will have stopped so nothing to be done now.To be fair it is difficult and you cannot always tell but really if the lip swelled immediately there are several things that could have been done.For now it is a sit and wait thing unfortunately.Kind Regards Dr Dinesh Maini Zenith Cosmetic Clinics
