Best method of chin liposuction?

Question

Hi there, I am planning on getting chin liposuction to lose my turkey neck double chin (hereditary) and have a more defined jaw line. I know there are several different types of liposuction but which would be the best method to get the best results? I am not worried about price or recovery, just whichever method will give the best result ideally with the smallest scar. Any advice would me much appreciated! Thank you

I treat this everyday in my practice.  Properly performed liposuction with laser and physical fat removal will do fantastic to remove the fat, lift the skin, and contour the jawline.  I pretreat everyone with Botox 1-2 weeks before surgery to relax the neck muscles, allowing for better retraction of the skin after surgery.  Then after treatment we do skin tightening with Venus Legacy to improve the results and decrease the neck swelling.  I suggest you only see an expert for treatment of this area as a meticulous surgeon is required to get great results and complications in this area can be devastating both medically and cosmetically. The results of liposuction of the chin are generally quite good in properly selected patients. They are made no better by use of a laser or ultrasound.

I agree with one of the expert's opinion here that one should choose the surgeon and his skill and not necessarily the device.  Liposuction is really just done one way by suctioning the subcutaneous fat. However, there is an art to this and experience counts.  It is the skill of the surgeon to know how much to remove and how much to leave. Also additional small incisions behind the earlobe for better access may mean an even better improvement but added incisions. Smartlipo laser lipolysis may be used in conjunction with liposuction to get additional skin tightening.

In the neck, there are 2 compartments of fat, above and below the platysma muscle. In our office, we perform open liposuction of the fat above the platysma muscle, and surgically dissect out the fat underneath the platysma muscle. A platysma plasty is also required to given more jawline definition.  This procedure is considered in neck lift without any skin removal  and is accomplished with  2 small incisions behind the ears and a one-inch incision underneath the chin. When there is excess skin present in the neck and patients are over 50 years of age, a lower face and neck lift is required.

More than anything else, it's choosing the provider.First of all, I would highly encourage you to seek a board-certified plastic surgeon with a few years of experience.Doing the procedure correctly after making a correct assessment is 95% of the job.Which specific equipment is used is of minor importance.The equipment will not change how many incisions are made.In general, chin liposuction can be done with either one or three openings. They tend to fade away and become almost imperceivable with time.The ability to make a correct assessment is paramount.Many patients with a hereditary double neck have insufficient jaw projection.Some patients are good candidates for liposuction of the chin and neck, while others are not.Some patients do better with a combined procedure.If a patient needs a chin implant, then the limitations of little suction alone need to be explained.My practice is almost exclusively devoted to liposuction and fat transfer.I have used and have access to a multitude of different types of equipment.While there are some brands of liposuction equipment I like more than others, my results vary little, if at all, based on the equipment that I use.I suggest you consult with one or more experienced, board-certified plastic surgeons to see what your options are.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.

Hi sjh82,Hereditary double chin or hereditary blunt chin-neck angle usually responds to different kinds of procedures, but based on experience, Extended Neck Contouring with subcutaneous fat liposuction, subplatysmal muscle and fat excision, platysmal muscle tightening, and excision of excess skin is the best solution. In this aspect, I agree with Dr. William Portuese. Other procedures may also work for a short time, but since this is a hereditary case, it is bound to come back unless all issues are addressed.Since you also mentioned your concern about the scar, in severe cases, 3 incisions will really have to be made, but for mild cases (not much excess skin and skin quality is still good), then an incision under the chin will suffice.
