Sore throat three weeks post op.

Question

I had TT, and chin lipo on April 21. It is now May 7 and my throat is still sore. I do have swelling still but concerned about my throat soreness. Is this normal?

I'm not sure whether you are referring to pain in the lining of the throat or in the muscles of the neck. Neither case you should be examined by your surgeon. By three weeks almost all patients are completely free of pain.

I am assuming that you had a general anesthesia for your surgery 3 weeks ago.  If this was the case, the sore throat is most likely due to the breathing tube that was placed for your anesthesia.  This should improve over time, but I would mention this issue to your surgeon so that you can be evaluated if needed.

Patients who undergo general anesthesia will, at times, have a sore throat caused by irritation from the endotracheal (or breathing) tube.It is important to differentiate if this is pain or tenderness in the area he or she did with liposuction or a sore throat (when it hurts when you swallow)I would definitely let your plastic surgeon know about this.Patients who have an endotracheal tube irritation typically feel better within a few days.Having a sore throat three weeks after this type of procedure is not typical.Hope you feel better soon.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.
