Can I get a hairline lowering procedure even after having a hair transplant? (Photo)

Question

I made a huge mistake as I have a high hairline and decided to do a hair transplant. Not doing my research about hair line lowering, I have regretted my decision. Can I still go ahead with the hairline lowering ? Will it affect my scalp as I already had a hair transplant ? I do not want a hair transplant to cover the density so please am I still able to go ahead and become a good candidate ?

Hairline lowering after previous hair transplantation? I have done this procedure for more than 35 years and it can be done on patients who have had previous hair transplantation. It is much cheaper faster and has no texture change to the hair. The scar is concealed by closing the incision so that hair grows through the scar and not behind it and therefore further transplants are not needed.

Thank you for your question.  You can still undergo a hairline lowering procedure.  I would recommend that you allow sufficient time for your transplanted hair to heal (~6 months to a year).  I would also visit with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your options in more detail.

You can have a hair line lowering procedure even after a hair transplant procedure.  It all depends on your examination and understanding of risks.   A doctor needs to sit down with your and explain what is possible with each type of surgery (realistic expectations).

It is possible to have a hairline lowering procedure.   Several experienced doctors across the country perform these types of operations and they are generally quite successful but somewhat involved.  The operation entails making an incision along the hairline, removing some forehead tissue and then suturing the two areas back together.  Since some forehead tissue has been removed, the overall effect is lowering of the hairline.  There will be a scar along the hairline however, so many doctors finish the procedure by transplanting hairs along the scar to camoflauge it.

Unfortunately I've had to do this numerous times over a lot of years in patients who had transplants prior to seeing me. The skin where the present transplants are located (the bald area prior to your previous surgery) is removed, the scalp advanced and the hairline established with hair of normal uniform density. I think there are examples of this very problem on my website. If not contact my office so they can send you pictures of other patients who had the grafts removed.

I would not recommend an excisional frontal hairline lowering surgery due to the scar tissue formed. I would recommend using hair transplantation to lower your hairline.  It is very effective and much more natural in appearance.

You can do a hair line lowering procedure after hair transplant. You need to see an experienced doctor who is familiar with these procedures to make sure that your scalp is not tight to cause further scaring.

As you had previous hair transplants, it is probably not a good idea to undergo a hairline lowering surgery because of scarring in the frontal area which might impact the ease of doing this type of surgery. I would continue doing it with hair transplantation since you started doing it already.

I have done about 20 cases wherein the hairline was previously transplanted and rejected at least twice that number whose scalp had been altered too greatly by prior surgery. The scalp has to have sufficient laxity which often is taken up by strip harvesting which can also disrupt blood supply. The simple one stage hairline advancement can likely not work with a tight, scarred scalp. The use of scalp expansion, however, can turn these patients into viable candidates and yield excellent results.
