How long would someone getting botox for the first time in their early twenties expect the results to last for?

Botox typically lasts 3-4 months.  If botox is used continuously for several cycles, it may seem that it lasts longer before full return of facial animation.  This is probably due to the atrophy of the continuously paralyzed muscles which may be weaker when the effect of the chemodenervation from botox wears off.  The muscles will begin working again, but will be weaker and take longer to hypertrophy to their baseline strength.

Botox is an FDA approved, temporary product that is manufactured from tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein. Typically I have seen Botox last anywhere from 3-4 months with my patients, but each scenario is different. Allergan’s research, along with that of additional 3rd parties, has to-date not shown a difference in the length of results due to the age of the patient. The key phrase to remember when receiving Botox treatments is that they are temporary and it is important to recognize that each patient’s response is different, which will affect the exact length of your results.
While the amount of product injected will certainly affect the length of your results, it is crucial that you receive the minimum recommended amount for the FDA-approved treatment area to ensure a long lasting response. If you do not receive at least that amount, it is possible that you will experience a reduced duration of product effectiveness. As in all procedures involving injectables, the skill and technique of the doctor is paramount to achieving your desired Botox results, so please ensure that you meet with a cosmetic physician to evaluate the area and establish a personalized treatment plan.

Age does not have an effect on the longevity of Botox. The duration of Botox is directly dependent on the dosage (the number of units). If more units are injected, it may last longer, but you should not get more units of Botox just to try to make it last longer. The number of units needed will depend solely on you and the extent of your wrinkles. In most patients, regardless of age, Botox usually lasts for around 3-4 months. However, the more you do Botox, it typically will last longer over time. Also, the results look better and better after repeated treatments because the muscles are not as strong, so therefore the lines are not as deep.

We have noticed that duration is affected by heavy exercise, causing shorter periods of effectiveness. Botox is felt to work on a receptor called the SNAP 25 receptor. It takes some time for Botox to bind at this site and once it is bound, the body starts the regeneration process of making the replacement protein that has been detached. This takes about the same amount of time in all people, but if facial blood flow is markedly increased before the Botox has fully acted, then one might not get their "money's worth" if the botulinum A toxin is getting carted away by heavy blood flow in the area. A significant amount of body heat is eliminated in the face head and hands during exercise. We recommend only light exercise the two days following Botox injections.
