How many pre-op visits with your surgeon are typical?

Thanks for your question.  In my practice there is no standard number of visits; some patients come to the office having seen multiple other surgeons, with a very good understanding of their options and very specific goals.  For these patients a single visit is usually fine.  On the other end of the spectrum are people who require multiple appointments to ensure they are fully informed and are comfortable with their final surgical choice.  Most of my patients have two preoperative appointments.

I will have as
many consultations as needed for the patient to feel comfortable with their
decision to proceed with surgery.  My policy is if it has been 6 months or more
since I last saw the patient prior to surgery then a 2nd consultation
is required.  I will reiterate what to
expect regarding surgery as well as address any questions they have.  If you are comfortable proceeding without
another consultation fine, if not, contact your surgeons office to book

 In my practice patients come for a consult at one visit and a preop for a second visit at the very least. There certainly allowed to come additional times prior to the operation if they  feel they need this for preparation for the operation.

In our practice, we see the patient for an initial consultation.  This visit is very detailed regarding their  concerns and options. We always like to see the patient at least one more time before surgery but we want to see the patient as many times as necessary for them to feel comfortable and have all of their questions answered.  At their pre-op visit, which is typically 2-3 weeks before the procedure, we provide them with their surgical packet, instructions and prescriptions.  Good luck with your surgery.

As many as needed to ensure that you and your surgeon are comfortable with the surgical plan.  Generally, an initial consultation and then prior to surgery another visit helps to clarify issues, answer questions and fine tune for surgery. Good luck with your surgery.

In my practice, the initial consultation includes reviewing the medical history, a physical examination, discussion of the surgical options and a meeting with my cosmetic coordinator.  Two weeks prior to surgery the patient is scheduled for an in person preoperative appointment which includes reviewing the plan for surgery, instructions for postoperative care, answering questions and signing the surgical consent forms.  It is important  that my patients know that they can come back to readdress any questions or concerns they may have between the time of consultation and surgery. Investing in surgery should incorporate you pre and post op care, to what ever degree you need.  If you have unanswered questions, have had any changes in your health (including weight changes) it may be a good idea to set up an appointment to review your surgical plan.  Try to write down all of your questions to make sure that you cover everything during your appointment.  Good luck with your upcoming surgery.

I always say as many as it takes to have all your questions answered and to feel that you are 100% ready to do your surgery.  Since it has been awhile I would make another appointment to see your PS.

It is always advisable to have a second updated consult with your surgeon if there has been a long time between your first consult and the date of your surgery. During this consult, your surgeon will have the opportunity to re-examine you to see if your have physically changed - gained or lost weight, developed any further laxity. Additionally, you will update any new medications you are taking, any new illnesses or condition as well as review your current mammography if indicated. Finally, your surgeon should once again review the details of your surgical plan including but not limited to reviewing the size of your breast post operatively, location of scars, pre-op preparation and post op recovery. You should then ask any lingering questions you have regarding your upcoming surgery. Bring a list so you don't forget any!

Thank you for your question.  The first visit is the consultation which typically takes 45-60 minutes and includes a discussion about the procedure as well as a thorough evaluation.  There is so much information given that it is impossible for any patient to absorb it all.  Therefore, we prefer a second preoperative visit two weeks before surgery to answer any other questions, perform a physical exam, take photos and provide prescriptions. For breast reduction surgeries, I like to have this second visit the day before surgery so that I can perform the pre-operative markings which saves time the day of surgery.Good luck.
