Can dermal fillers be used to lessen the appearance of piercing scars? (Photo)

Question

I have two lip piercing scars. The holes have closed completely but there are indentations still. Could a dermal filler be used to raise the scars level with the rest of my skin? I do not mind if there are dark marks, only the indentations bother me.

Our treatments use combination therapy to improve the epidermis and dermis for most deep scars. The options available for acne scars depend on the character of your scars, in terms of topography and contour. We see atrophic and hypertrophic acne scars, as well as scars that have hypo and hyperpigmentation. We begin each scar evaluation with an assessment of scar quality and subtype. Our main concern is rebuilding collagen and that is why we use a HIDEF protocol that includes combination therapy. Morpheus 8, scar subcision, fibrous release, fractional laser, CO2 laser, Thulium laser, PDL Vbeam laser, and fractional resurfacing can be used in addition to TCA Cross and chemical peels to further improve skin. Patients should start Melarase AM and Melarase PM for active hyperpigmentation. Always begin with a consultation to decide whether early subcision should be started.

Yes, this can be improved with a combination of fillers combined with lasers, microneedling/prp and subcision. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question and photos. Dermal fillers can indeed be used to fill depressed scars and make them less visible. I suggest combining this superficial treatment with a series of microdermabrasion or laser skin resurfacing sessions to help your skin heal naturally as well. One quick way to determine if fillers would be helpful in your situation is to stretch the skin around the scar. If the scar lessens in appearance, then you are a good candidate for fillers to correct the issue. This would also make you a good candidate for laser treatments. As with all of these treatments, the skill of the doctor is of utmost importance. Don't trust your face to just anyone.

Scars can be treated but usually require more than one method and attempt.  Make sure you pick a qualified and experienced provider!  That is the most important factor.
