Rash and discoloration. Could this be serious? (Photo)

Question

I had a BA/TT on 1/10/18. My pain pump in my LT groin was leaking since POD1, and the dressing was loosened. POD5 my pain pump was removed, and a red rash was noted at the site. POD6 the rash spread down my thigh, buttocks and RT thigh. I was placed on Doxy. POD7 the rash is worse and dark areas of purple discoloration are noted. No fever, or pain, it is not warm. I am seeing my PS later today, but wanted additional opinions. Could this be Necrotizing?? No other meds since POD4.

First of all, sorry for your problems.Any time a patient has a red rash or discoloration, the surgeon needs to distinguish between an allergic reaction or infection.If it were an infection you would be having fever, pain, swelling and drainage. If it is an infection, a culture (cotton swab test) can be taken of any open lesions and drainage. The results will return in a few days and your surgeon can tailor the antibiotics to best treat you.A rash can occur from the antibiotic ointment, constant moistness of the skin or allergic reaction to medication.  An allergic reaction can be treated by stopping the offending substance or medicine. Sometimes a steroid injection or steroid cream can help.It is best to see your surgeon, so he can figure this out for you.Good Luck!
