Claritin D and Singulair before Rhinoplasty?

Question

My rhinoplasty is scheduled in approx 1.5 weeks. Of course my allergies would start acting up right now. Is it safe to take Claritin D or Singulair this close to surgery? I have also been doing a nasal rinse.

I would not dissuade you from taking either of those medications or continuing your nasal rinses. However, make sure that your surgeon agrees. Reducing your levels of inflammation prior to surgery is a very good thing so I think continuing your regimen will be beneficial. It is always best to check with your operative surgeon about what the restrictions are prior to  a rhinoplasty procedure. In our practice, it  is acceptable  to take Claritin and Singulair before surgery, since  they do not interfere with bleeding times or anesthesia. We do not recommend Claritin-D to our patient's because the decongestant component can raise blood pressure in certain individuals which can cause a nosebleed
