6 weeks post op, shooting pain on one side of the breast. Is this normal?

I had my first breast augmentation done on July 7, 2015. My right breast, the larger implant is having shooting pain on the side. It's sore and firmer than my right side (smaller breast). My left breast is softer and it's dropped a lot already. My right breast is a little high also. Lastly, my nipple is uneven. Is this common for 6 week post-op? Is it too early to worry about capsular contraction? I just wanted to make sure these symptoms are normal. Please let me know, than you!

Thank you for your question.  It is not unusual to have soreness or pains on the side of the chest at 6 weeks.  The breasts will often heal and settle at different rates.  It is not unusual for one side to be more sore than the other.

Hello,It is not uncommon to have breasts settle at different rates and feel somewhat different at 6 weeks post op- especially with two different sized implants, however it is always best to inform your Plastic Surgeon if you are having unresolved pain and concerns as you heal.All the best!

Thank you for your excellent questions.  At 6 weeks your breast results will continue to change subtlety over the next several months, but likely because of swelling from surgery, and the larger amount of skin stretch placed by the larger implant on your right breast, it would not be uncommon for that side to have a bit more pain, and still be a bit higher riding than your left.  The shooting pain is normally indicative of irritation to the nerves found in your breast skin that are stretched from the implant.  I would wait for a couple of more months, with vigilant follow up with your physician, before assessing your final results. Hang in there!

In general, breast pain can persist for weeks to months after augmentation and almost always resolves without any treatment. First of all thank you for the question.  These can be common symptoms at 6 weeks.  Both breast may heal and settle at different times. The shooting pains does sound like normal nerve sensory changes and will get better in time.  I would recommend following up with your plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns.  Best of Luck.

It is common for breast implants to heal and settle at different rates, especially if different sized implants are used.  Six weeks is too early to worry.  Capsular contracture does not occur this early; your body is still forming and refining normal scar tissue.  Be patient and discuss your concerns with your surgeon.  Best wishes.
