Saline implants: two days ago, one breast became hard and is producing little milk. Implant rupture or milk duct issue?

I had a saline breat augmentation about 7 years ago. Since then they have been wonderful and I have had 2 children and breastfeed them. However my second was born about 5 months ago and I was breastfeeding just fine but about two days ago one breast became very hard and is producing little milk. Do I have a implant issue or is it a issue with a blocked milk duct ?

Hi Rtheis,Usually a capsule comes on gradually.......usually over time.  A sudden onset would typically be from another cause, like you mentioned, a blocked duct. I would see your OB-GYN doctor first, then if necessary check in with your PS.  All the best, "Dr. Joe"

If your breast was fine until two days ago and you have been breast feeding, this probably is an issue with your breast gland more so than with your implant. It sounds like your breast is engorged and not letting down. If you have increased redness and warmth, you could be developing mastitis which might need antibiotics. I would recommend that you see your Ob-Gyn or plastic surgeon for evaluation. Capsular contracture at this point could happen but I think it is less likely to be the cause of what is going on-your doctor will be able to tell the difference with an exam.

It sounds as though you are developing a capsular contracture. I don't think this has anything directly to do with milk production out of the breast. It may be an inflammatory response however that could indirectly contribute to breast discharge.

Based on your description it is very likely that you have an obstructed milk duct or possibly mastitis.  I would see your plastic surgeon immediately for an examination and also see your obstetrician.
