How long after a labiaplasty can I get pregnant safely? Concerned about possible labia tearing at birth.

Question

My surgeon told me I can get pregnant and deliver a baby vaginally without problems after the labiaplasty. He said as soon as I can have sex, I can also try for a baby because the 6 weeks recovery time + 9 months pregnancy are enough. However I don’t trust my surgeon since he has often given me false hopes and generally brushes everything off as no problem. I also had a serious split after my first labiaplasty, the revision was fine though. Scared of labial tearing at birth.

It is usually safe to have intercourse 6 weeks after labiaplasty procedure, and 9 months afterwards should be enough time for the majority of wound healing to take place to safely give vaginal birth.

Although possible, it's unlikely to have tearing of the labia during childbirth. I don’t believe it is any more likely to have a tear of the labia during childbirth after a labiaplasty. The most common place that I have seen tears in the labia from a vaginal delivery is at the clitoral frenulum. This is the point where the clitoris attaches to the labia minora. The bigger issue with labiaplasty and healing has to do with intercourse. We recommend that patients wait six weeks before resuming sexual intercourse following labiaplasty such that everything has been healed completely.

I usually instruct my patients not to have sexual intercourse until 6 weeks after the labiaplasty. If you were to conceive after 6 weeks,  it will be safe to have a vaginal delivery at the time of your due date. The labiaplasty does not increase the risk of tearing after a vaginal delivery.

Your surgeon is correct, you may get pregnant soon after your labiaplasty. A vaginal delivery is fine as well.

When you only have labiaplasty, the chance of tearing at birth is very low. It is a situation to be feared more in vaginoplasty operations. Even if we think that there will be birth 10 months after the operation, the wound will be completely healed. You will not have a problem at birth

Your surgeon is correct. Your chance of ripping your labiaplasty will not be increased 9 months from surgery. Vaginal tears are common at vaginal delivery whether you have a labiaplasty or not. Some of these tears can extend into the labia. It.s just the nature of vaginal delivery. However, the risk will not be higher simply because you had a labiaplasty 9 months ago.

I recommend that labiaplasty patients wait until at least 6 weeks postop for sexual activity. That would be a safe time to try getting pregnant. Of course if you need a revision then again wait until 6 weeks postop to start trying to conceive. Good luck!
