When should I have labiaplasty after birth & will anesthesia impact breast milk?

Im interested in having labiaplasty. I’m 7 month pregnant. When should I have the surgery after birth? Will anesthesia impact my breast milk? I willl be pumping. WWill the procedure combine with anal skin tag removal? What other procedures for vaginal rejuvenation can labiaplasty go with at the same time? Thank you!

I usually instruct my patients that they have to be at least 6 months after delivery. I would suggest that if you are still nursing that you discard the milk produced for 2 days after the procedure. Many other vulvar and vaginal procedures can be done at the same time that you are having a labiaplasty

I would wait at least 6-12 months after giving birth. There is a tremendous amount of change that occurs in your body after birth, and you want to ensure things have settled down before undergoing surgery. If you're worried about anesthesia, many patients tolerate a labiaplasty very well under local anesthesia only. A labiaplasty can be combined with other rejuvenation procedures, but it depends what you're looking for. For example, other rejuvenation procedures include clitoral hood reduction, mons or labia majora reduction, mons fat grafting, or tightening. An anal skin tag removal at the same time can be done, but it would involve rotating you on your stomach to access the anal skin tag.

Dear patient, usually it will take 3-6 months to heal properly so doing surgery at that point showed be sage, but having a newborn baby who will be demanding, you need to make sure you have enough help and support, especially as you are breast feeding.
As far as anesthesia as far as it is done under local you shouldn't worry, for general anesthesia, you need to pump and dump for 24 hours after the procedure.

The short answer is YES. You can have a labiaplasty while breastfeeding, but you would heal better if you waited until you were done breastfeeding. Why? Because breastfeeding causes temporary vaginal atrophy (thinning of the vaginal skin including the labia) which negatively impacts the healing process. Local anesthesia won't get into breast milk. Antibiotics typically prescribed before labiaplasty won't hurt the baby. However, if you want the best possible results, why rush?

Great question! I get this question all the time. I encourage you to breast feed for as long as you want to and then once you're having normal menses and remote from your postpartum phase you may then undergo a safe, properly planned and timed procedure. If you are finished having children then you may have a vaginoplasty at the time of your labiaplasty.

Thank you for sharing your question.  In order to allow your tissues to return to their new normal after delivery, I would recommend waiting 3 months after delivery or the cessation of nursing, whichever is later.  Hope this helps.

Hi Sunkiss21, this is a great questions. It will take 6 months for a lot of the changes from pregnancy to reverse themselves, so it is ideal to wait about that time for surgery to optimize results. If you are pumping you can pump and dump until the anesthesia is out of your system, but your breast milk production may go down some over those days if you are not pumping as frequently. In terms of other procedures that can be done at the same time, these include anal skin tag removal (not all surgeons do this procedure though), clitoral hood reduction, and vaginoplasty. Anal skin tags are akin to external hemorrhoids, and not all surgeons are comfortable with this procedure. However if aesthetic surgery is being done on the vulva and there are skin tags present (they enlarge with pregnancy and delivery) it is beneficial to have these removed at the time of surgery to optimize aesthetic results.
