Will I always have the weird round shape at the upper part of the breast? (Photos)

Question

9 days post op, does this look normal? I just underwent breast augmentation 9 days ago. I was a barely an A cup and went with 350cc natrelle 410 cohesive teardrop shaped implants with the goal do look ‘natural’. I understand that there would be some swelling, and the the implants would appear to be high, but will these drop? Will I always have the weird round shape at the upper part of the breast? My breasts were not shaped at all like this prior. I’ve also had no children, if that helps. I’m hoping that I’ll love them eventually :(

Thank you for the question.  Thank you for the photo.  You are early in your post operative course. The implants will typically rise up after surgery.  They typically start to fall at one month.  They can take 6 to 12 months to get to their appropriate position and volume.  This is the "drop and fluff" phenomenon that folks are talking about.  Please follow your Plastic Surgeon's instructions.  Each Board Certified Plastic Surgeon may have their own protocol, and each patient is different.  Let them know your thoughts.

Hello,Your implants were too big for your anatomy (not conducive for a 'natural' look, whatever that might be), and they are well above your incisions. This is not an ideal situation. Although textured implants don't settle as much, in 50% of my patients they do tend to glide again, allowing more settling. At this point, you'll need to sit tight and be patient, at least 6 months. The high-riding implants demonstrated by your photos are completely consistent with the early, postoperative course following a breast augmentation surgery. This is frequent in patients, such as yourself, who have tight ski with larger implants.  It will take anywhere from 3 to 4 months for the skin to expand which will allow your implant to fall in the proper position.  In addition, there is a normal course of muscle swelling, which is prominent in the upper pole of tge breast where the muscle is located. Not to worry, it's all normal.  Just be patient.

It’s a little early to say and the upper pole fullness you see you could just be swelling but… It always makes me nervous with the type of implant you have because they are textured and usually don’t move much after placement. So I always feel better if they look pretty good right after surgery because I have found with these implants they don’t settle as much as the smooth implants. So give it a good 4 to 6 more weeks for the swelling to go down but if they still look when I talk to your doctor about the massage. Again, you’re not supposed to massage these implants much but you might want to try if they are still high at that point.

Thank you for your question. It is not uncommon to have swelling. Breasts may not heal at the same rate, causing one breast to appear different than the other. It can take up to 12 weeks for the implants to settle and you to see the final result. Follow up with your board certified surgeon to address your concern. Good luck!

You are very early in your recovery.  Over the next 6 months the muscle will relax and allow the breast to take on a more natural shape.  You will always have cleavage, but it should not always seem so high and round.  Best wishes.

should have a better look immediately after the procedure as they are not known to settle like smooth round implants.  But if your surgeon is well experienced with anatomic implants (uses them 50% or more of the time), you should be okay with your surgeon's post-op instructions.  So let your surgeon know of your concerns and allow your surgeon to make this best for you as all surgeons should want that for their patients and if yours did not settle, this would be a poor outcome.
