I am 16 years old and currently have F-G size breasts; however I have a small back and usually buy from a 28 to a 30 band. My breasts are hugely disproportionate to my frame causing constant back ache, rashes and shoulder grooves. I am extremely self conscious of them and would like to know if I am a suitable candidate, How much the procedure would cost and whether it would be possible to have the operation on the nhs? thank you!
Answer: Breast Reduction in Teens Teens who have disproportionately large breasts affecting self esteem and quality of life may be candidates for breast reduction. I would advise some consultations with board certified plastic surgeons to determine your candidacy. 16 year olds having breast reduction surgery need to be mature physically and emotionally, able to deal with discomfort and the recovery process, as well as willing to accept the trade off of permanent scars on the breasts. Costs can run anywhere from $6500-8500, depending on many factors including your location, where the surgery is being performed, and the extent of the breast reduction.

Answer: Breast reduction for a 16 year old? I'm sorry to hear about the physical and psychosocial problems your disproportionately large breasts are causing you. It is probable that you are dealing with juvenile breast hypertrophy along with the physical and psychosocial consequences of this diagnosis. In other words, the breasts are too large for your frame causing both physical and psychological distress. It is not too early to do your homework and learn as much as possible about breast reduction surgery and the potential risks and complications associated with the procedure. Hopefully you have the support of your parents as you do your homework. Unsatisfactory scarring is one of the potential complications. Make sure you also understands that further surgery may be necessary in the future (for example if the breasts were to grow in size again). On the other hand, breast reduction surgery is one of the most patient pleasing operations we perform and I think that for the right teenager (enough symptoms) it may be an excellent option (regardless of the age). Sometimes breast reduction surgery is covered through health insurance. The best way to obtain insurance coverage for breast reduction surgery involves some “hoops” to jump through. The more documentation you have (for example, from your primary care doctor, physical therapist, chiropractor etc.) the better when it comes to obtaining insurance “authorization” for the procedure. This documentation and letter/pictures from your plastic surgeon will help you obtain authorization. When the time is right, seek consultation with well-trained/experienced board-certified plastic surgeons. I hope this, and the attached link, helps.

Answer: Breast Reduction in a 16 year old Breast reduction surgery in your age is quite common. There is a condition called Juvenile Breast Hypertrophy that affects peri-pubescent girls and cause very rapid breast growth. Breast reduction surgery is quite well tolerated in a young adult and is usually covered by most insurances. Thank you for your question.

Answer: Breast reduction in teenage years Thank you for posting your question. Breast reduction surgery in your teenage years prior to "full maturity" may come with some additional information that you can more fully discuss with your plastic surgeon when you are evaluated for the operation. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like you definitely have disproportionately large breasts for your frame and some resultant problems. Having those problems documented by your primary care physician is important prior to seeing a plastic surgeon if you would like your insurance to cover the procedure. A discussion with your plastic surgeon should cover their operative plan, your overall surgical risks including changes in sensation, changes in future breast feeding, possibility of needing a second breast reduction in the future if you are not fully matured at the time of your first procedure, wound healing issues, and other overall risks associated with the operation. This discussion will allow you to make an informed decision regarding a breast reduction procedure.

Answer: "Am I a candidate for breast reduction?" Please have a discussion with your parents about your concerns with your breasts. With their permission and support you can locate a reputable plastic surgeon who is in network with your insurance company. Upon consultation your surgeon will make a treatment recommendation. Your surgeon will probably have an insurance specialist in the office who can assist you. Best wishes!
