Hello, I'm in the process of trying to get approved by my insurance for breast reduction surgery. I have been going to PT for the past two months and it's not helping me. I have severe neck, back and shoulder pain. I'm nervous to ask my PT for a letter to help me out with my surgery. What documentation do I need from my PT that would explain to my insurance that the surgery would be the best option for me? I'm 138lbs 5' 3" and I wear a 32HH. How should I go about asking my PT? Thanks in advance

Answer: Your therapist is there to help you I would ask your therapist if they feel that reducing the size of your breasts would make your physical therapy more effective. More than likely, they will agree and encourage you to undergo a breast reduction, as it may be the most beneficial thing you could do to help with your back, neck and shoulder pain. Sometimes the therapists are hesitant to suggest the surgery. If they feel it would be helpful, all they need to do is write a letter giving their opinion that a breast reduction would be helpful with your therapy and is not being done for cosmetic reasons.

Answer: Ask my physical therapist for a letter. It is very unlikely that your physical therapist is unfamiliar with your situation and has treated may just like you. Letters of support for breast reduction are a very common request and we feel you should have no problem getting what you need.
