Does all hyaluronic acid filler eventually need to be dissolved after a period of time?

I had some lip and cheek HA filler about 10 years ago and I’m still really happy (and am often complimented on) the results. I keep hearing things about HA filler never dissolving and migrating being inevitable. But if I am still happy with my results several years later is there any reason I MUST get it dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are designed to be temporary and are gradually broken down and absorbed by the body over time. The duration of their effects can vary based on the type of filler used, the area treated, and individual factors such as metabolism and lifestyle. Typically, HA fillers last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years.

However, there are instances where fillers may persist longer than expected. If you are happy with the results and not experiencing any issues such as migration, lumps, or discomfort, there is generally no medical reason to have them dissolved.

Migration of filler can occur but is not inevitable for everyone. It is important to maintain regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider to monitor the treated areas, especially if you have had fillers for an extended period.

If you have any concerns or notice changes in the treated areas, it's advisable to consult with a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who can assess your situation and provide guidance. Otherwise, if you are satisfied with the appearance and there are no adverse effects, there is no mandatory need to dissolve the filler.

Dermal fillers ( Hyaluronic acid based - HA) do not need to be dissolved. They are metabolized gradually by the body as HA is a natural product. When they are dissolved with hyaluronidase it is typically because patients are unhappy with their results because they have been over injected or they became infected or encapsulated and showing visible lumps.If permanent fillers such as calcium-based fillers or long-lasting fillers such as Ellanse have been used and created the lumps, then it will be much more challenging to dissolve and most likely they will need to be removed surgically by a facial plastic surgeon.Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi Facial Plastic & Laser Surgeon

You absolutely do not have to dissolve your hyaluronic acid filler. Many patients have experienced the same as you where the filler does not seem to go away.
