How would the stitch from an otoplasty 11 years ago be removed?

I had my ears pinned back (otoplasty) 11 years ago I have a stitch remaining in the back of my ear. After having the surgery to pin my ears back 10 days later I had the appointment for the stitches to be removed however the nurse was unable to remove one of the stitches from my left ear and advised it would work it’s way out on it’s own. This hasn’t happened and I have repeatedly tried to remove by cutting it down and pulling with tweezers with no luck. Now it’s starting to burst thru the front of my ear and is tender. How would this be removed?

I’m sorry to hear that this unusual incident is happening to you. Please see your surgeon (preferably) or a board certified plastic surgeon to have this removed. There is a risk of infection at this point, so the sooner this is removed, the better.

Depending upon the type of stitch and where it's located, you may need this to be surgically removed.  It often can be done under local anesthetic. Please be sure to seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced with otoplasty surgery.Good luck!

Sorry to hear.
The stitch could be a skin stitch but is more likely to a suture that was placed in the cartilage to hold the ear back. Our study showed this to occur in around 3% of ears.
It is usually very easy to remove with a small injection of local anaesthetic and afyer such a long time this is unlikely to affect the appearance of your ear as scar tissue will be holding your ears back.

I would schedule an appointment with a Plastic surgeon to be seen ASAP.  If you develop redness, drainage, and or fever then seek care at a causality or emergency room immediately. Don't delay.  Best wishes
