Will lip injections make my cleft lip scar more noticeable? (Photos)

Question

I was born with a cleft lip and palate and I'm wanting to get lip injections in my top lip. Will getting injections make my scar more noticeable? Also, will lip injections make my top lip look more even?

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  Depending on the pliability or "stretchiness" of your lip tissues your scar may look less noticeable after dermal filler injections.  With asymmetrical placement, larger deposits of filler in the small side of the lip should help improve the balance between your right and left sides.  If your cleft lip scar is firm and does not stretch, filler placement may leave a tourniquet type appearance with the lips on either side of the scar increasing in size but the area of the scar unable to do so.  See an ASPS board certified plastic surgeon in consultation to discuss. Hope this helps.

In your case, it would likely be easy to augment the tissue "behind" the lip area on the un-scarred side so you can achieve a more symmetrical lip eversion.If you choose to have filler, go slowly and go to a highly experienced injector who won't place too much filler or place filler where it shouldn't go. Taking baby steps might take longer and cost a little more, but by going slowly, you won't be overwhelmed with a change you don't like.

You would get nice improvement with lip fillers. These fillers, (Volbella, Restylane, Juvederm) are good to create a symmetrical and full lip. The scar can be improved with lasers and microneedling/prp. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a facial sculpting expert. Best, Dr. Emer

TaylorCeleste.    It appears from your photo that you have a modest upper lip asymmetry.  This should be greatly improved with filler, like Juvederm Ultra plus. Be sure to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist.  Good luck!

An experienced injector should be able to improve the symmetry between the right and left sides of your upper lip by injecting filler in areas of volume deficiency and minimizing injection in areas of relative fullness.  You would also be able to enhance the volume of the central aspect of the wet portion (wet vermillion) of your upper lip to lessen the gap between the upper and lower lips.  This would help improve the volume ratio of the upper lip to lower lip for a more harmonious overall lip aesthetic.  I would recommend consulting with a plastic surgeon because of the knowledge of cleft lips required by the specialty in addition to scar management and injection expertise.

Thank you for your question and picture. It depends of how ¨stretchable¨ is your scar. It may make it worse if your scar is very firm. On the other hand, if your scar is somewhat soft and able to stretch, dermal fillers can greatly improve the size and symmetry of your lips.
