Most providers will recommend stopping aspirin 10-14 days prior to the procedure and other anti-inflammatories at least 3 days prior. This is to reduce the risk of bruising, but are there are reasons to discontinue these medications? The simple answer is, YES!It has been shown that these products slow wound healing considerably. It is believed that this is a result of an increased level of tumor necrosis alpha. As Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to create a thermal injury which requires healing, it is possible that taking these products will have an effect on the final outcome. The real answer is, WE DON'T KNOW. I have not seen any studies showing that patients do the same, better, or worse when taking these products during the healing phase. Therefore, if possible, it is best to avoid these products and take Tylenol if needed. For how long? We don't know, but the first 3 months appear to be most important.Reference:IUBMB Life. 2000 Dec;50(6):391-5.Aspirin ingestion impairs oral mucosal ulcer healing by inducing membrane-bound tumor necrosis factor-alpha release.Slomiany BL, Slomiani A.
