Tachycardia and low blood pressure after surgery

Question

I'm planning on having a full tummy tuck and breast lift in the fall. I'm terrified of getting put to sleep. I've had wisdom teeth removed and 4 c sections and after each surgery had tachycardia and low blood pressure. It's a horrible feeling! Nurses would say I would feel better in 4 hours but it takes more like 8 hours. I don't do well with drugs (even cold meds make me feel off). Is there anything I can do to prevent this? I'll be out much longer so I'm very worried. Thank you

I would recommend that you have your surgery in a fully accredited inpatient or outpatient surgery center with a board certified anesthesiologist present for your procedure and recovery.

Thank you for sharing your question and I am sorry to hear of your recovery symptoms.  Planning with any surgery revolves around patient safety, all the more so with an elective procedure such as a mommy makeover.  It would be important to have discussions between your general medicine doctor, plastic surgeon, and anesthesiologist to ensure that any medical issues have been addressed and optimized.  Voice your concern to your surgeon, they should be able to offer reassurances and recommendations.

I encourage you to discuss your medical history with your surgeon.  Tachycardia and low blood pressure could be causes for concern unless the underlying cause is known and can be well controlled.  Certain medications given during surgery that are used to control bleeding can sometimes cause the heart rate to increase.  Anesthesia or narcotic medications can affect blood pressure.

You need to get copies of your previous anesthesia records and supply them to the anesthesiologist that will be taking care of you during the tummy tuck surgery and have an in person or phone consult with that doctor to see what they recommend.
