I am wondering about getting jaw implants for a wider jaw. I have had personal complications which make it risky and dangerous for me to go under general anesthesia. Can jaw implants be put in under local anesthesia?
Answer: Chin Implant General anesthesia is rarely used for this procedure. It is up to the patient but normally patients undergo IV sedation for such a procedure. Local anesthesia is used for additional comfort and to provide vasoconstriction. The implant can be inserted through a small incision inside the mouth or through an incision under the chin. For optimal size selection I often use computer morphing too simulate possible outcomes. Hope the help. The link goes into greater detail. Michael Kulick MD

Answer: Placing jaw implants under local Anastasia The simple answer to your question is yes facial implants can be placed using local anesthesia. Most likely the most talented providers in getting the facial skeleton anesthetized will be oral surgeons. Some oral surgeons are trained in facial aesthetics but generally these procedures are mostly done by plastic surgeons or facial plastic surgeons. I don't know what complication that you had but most likely the best approach will be local anesthesia with twilight anesthesia also known as conscious sedation. Discuss your previous anesthetic issues during your consultation. It's fairly easy to get all the soft tissues numbed for surgical purposes but it can be challenging to get the skeleton anesthetized. Some facial implants require separating a layer on the bone called the periosteum which may be uncomfortable. With enough sedation and proper use of local anesthesia this should be a tolerable procedure without the need for general anesthesia. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD

Answer: Jaw implants The procedure is typically performed under sedation with Local anesthesia. Theoretically, one can use only local anesthesia but the surgeon would have to use multiple 'injection sites' to 'freeze' the wide area of the implants. Sedation is typically very safe and you should investigate the use of sedation first
