Is this too much for a submentoplasty?

I was quoted $9,000 for a submentoplasty (not including anesthesia/facility fees). The doctor is in Irvine, California. This seems a little steep to me, and I'm thinking I should get a second opinion.

In our practice, a submentoplasty involves removal of fatty deposits above and below the platysma muscle in the neck, and a platysma plasty. We use the term "neck lift", not sub mental plasty. It does not involve removal of any skin. A lower facelift with a submentoplasty is required when there is loose skin in the neck and patient's are over 50 years of age. A cost of a sub mental plasty is directly related to the amount of time it takes under anesthesia, time in the operating room, and the surgeon's fee for performing the procedure. for many examples of a neck lift , please see the link and video below

Prices vary from surgeon to surgeon.  One of the determining factors may also be location.Prices in that location may be higher than other locations.  Its best to get various opinions and costsfrom other offices.

Thanks for sharing.  I do not want to comment directly on price but they can vary.  One suggestion, you can look up "Neck Lifts" on realself and see what average costs are in the nation. Orange County will have above average costs.  I perform many lower facelifts/necklifts under local anesthesia and oral valium.  It is comfortable for the patient, an easier recovery and reduces the cost to the patient as there is no anesthesia fee incurred. You may want too visit a few board certified surgeons experienced in face and neck lifting.

Well as you already know, fees vary considerably from region to surgeon and beyond.  I would  have to know just what your submentoplasty includes before commenting on the cost quoted.  If it includes a cervicoplasty (lower neck lift), then its not out of the ball park.  If its truly limited to the area under your chin, you can find much better pricing where you live.

Hello Todd92602,The costs for any surgery are based on the market factors and patient characteristics.  Being that I'm in Houston, our charges are significantly different than in California.  For my market that is a very expensive submentoplasty if performed alone.  As far as patient characteristics some necks that are revisions, larger, or have more work to be done may cost more.  Keys to determine if that price is worth it for you is to get a consult from another surgeon in the area.  The next thing to consider is the results of the surgeon.  You can look at before and after photos, talk with anyone who has had a similar surgery by that surgeon that you know, and take a look at testimonials at multiple online sources including RealSelf.  If after all that you feel it is worth that price to you then go with it.  I hope this helps and good luck.

Hi Todd92602, that does sound a bit high for a submentoplasty. Prices can differ between surgeons for similar procedures based on location, experience level, and complexity of the procedure. If you feel uncomfortable with the quote you may want to do a couple more consultations to get a better feel for cost.

I agree that that is high! In many cases I do this under a local anesthetic in my certified office operating room which decreases the prices further for my patients.
