You should see a hair restoration
physician who will obtain your hair loss history and look at your hair by
microscopic evaluation.  This study along
with family history can tell you where you are heading in terms of future hair
loss such that appropriate measures can be taken early, while you are
young.  If you are diagnosed with early
androgenetic alopecia (AGA), finasteride will help you to keep the hair you
have by blocking dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Topical Rogaine
is another choice however it will take 6 months of daily use before you see a
difference.  Both meds are FDA approved
for AGA.  

First lets understand exactly what finasteride does and how it works.
Fact 1 - Finasteride is a DHT blocker that works to prevent DHT from binding to only one of the 3 DHT receptors n our body.
Fact 2 - Finasteride has a half life of only 6 hours.
Fact 3 - Finasteride taken orally effectively blocks only 60% of circulating DHT in our system.
Fact 4 - Finasteride is NOT a hair growth stimulant or agonist.
We can conclude from the above facts that finasteride can partially reduce the circulating DHT in our system.  It does not grow hair.  Some hair on its own may regrow due to the reduced DHT impact, however it is not caused by the finasteride.
I recommend seeing a hair growth specialist who can provide a program which stops hair loss more effectively than finasteride can AND also includes a hair growth stimulant which actually does cause hair growth faster and thicker than it would grow on its own.
