Interstitial Cystitis and Breast Augmentation

Question

Hello, I’m 27 years old and have been diagnosed with IC. Can this get in the way of my Breast augmentation ? I have the operation in three weeks and I am a bit worried. Any advice would help greatly.

Interstitial cystitis can be quite frustrating to deal with, and varies in severity. There is no firm evidence that it is associated with an infectious agent, and therefore should not prohibit you from having a sucessful surgery. A urinary tract infection, on the other hand , would need to be completely resolved prior to surgery.

Cystitis in and of itself will not preclude you from having surgery. However, check with your PCP to see if you may also need to add an antibiotic. Cystitis isoften associated with urinary tract infections in which case I would delay surgery until that's taken care of. Good luck, Dr PG

mischivd28.  I appreciate your concern, but all medical issues and past medical history should be frankly discussed with your plastic surgeon prior to the operation. If there are possible issues, medical clearance by your regular medical doctor should be performed to be certain that it is safe for you to have this operation. Hello and thank you for the question. It's best that you discuss this with your surgeon. Interstitial cystitis is typically not caused by bacteria.  I was wondering if you are referring to bacterial cystitis or common UTI? The key is making sure there is no active urinary infection (or any other infection) at the time of breast augmentation. As long as there is no active infection at the time of surgery, it should be fine to proceed. I don't think the two are related and having IC won't affect your ability to have breast augmentation, but you should make your surgeon aware of this diagnosis prior to your procedure to ensure everybody is on the same page.  Hope this helps!

Since implants are foreign objets best to advise your CI treating MD so a possible preoperative course of antibiotics can be prescribed. Or discuss with your chosen PS also..
