Will insurance cover my mole removal by a plastic surgeon? (Photo)

Question

I am looking to get a mole removed, and since it is on the back of my head, I do not want a massive/visible scar as I already have one. I was told that plastic surgeons are the best to remove it with minimal scarring. Is this covered by insurance and if not, what is the typical cost? Attached a photo for reference on sizing in relation to head.

Mole removal may or may not be covered by insurance. If the mole has concerning features such as asymmetry, irregular boarders, change in color, or enlarging then these could be signs of an abnormal mole which may warrant surgical biopsy or removal. The decision on if the procedure is for cosmetic or functional concerns will be up to the treating provider and an in office examination is recommended.

Medical insurance sometimes will cover the cost of mole removal, but it will depend on your particular insurance.  Either you or the surgeon who would be performing the mole removal would have to check with your insurance to see if it is something they would cover or not.

Hi Michael! If the lesion has been growing / changing and appears to be concerning, an excisional biopsy can be performed and this may be covered by insurance. A biopsy often gives the "green-light" for removal with insurance - especially if concerning. I do have some that simply want the area removed and closed nicely, regardless of insurance. In this case, the pricing may range from $500-1000 depending on complexity. Hope this helps!
