Mole came back after it was cauterized and removed. What is it? (Photo)

Question

I had a bump on my nose appear after a pimple and it never went away. I went to my family doctor and she wouldn’t refer me to dermatologist because she said the bump was “aesthetic”. I looked for a medical office which told me they could remove the bump (never told me what it was). They cauterized it and removed it and a few weeks later it was back. Went again a year later to remove it and it came back again. What is it?

Mole removal begins with a comprehensive examination and consultation to determine the likelihood of a mole being worrisome. Excisional and incisional biopsies are reserved for suspicious moles. But it’s good news that most moles are not problematic and are only cosmetic, thus leading to the option of scarless or non-surgical mole removal with lasers and RF and plasma. Our office specializes in non-surgical mole removal.

I cannot tell you what this lesion is just by looking at your photos. The most likely reason it keeps recurring is that during the removal, they are not getting rid of the whole lesion. They are probably performing some sort of shave excision when you need to have the thing completely excised and probably biopsied. I think it may warrant a dermatology evaluation at this point. You may also try going to a plastic surgery office to have the lesion biopsied.

If this is something that has been treated multiple times and continues to return, I recommend advocating to your PCP to send you to a board-certified dermatologist. The dermatologist will be able to look at it more closely and determine if any other treatments are appropriate. Hope this helps and take care!
