Infection of incision after breast reduction (Photo)

Question

I had breast reduction surgery on 1/8/18 but a couple days ago I noticed foul smelling pus coming from my incision site. I saw my PS yesterday who said it isn’t anything to be worried about and to wash with soap, keep it dry, and put a band aid on it. My next appointment with him isn’t until 2/6/17 and I am worried that the wound is getting worse and may need more care than I am giving it. The other breast is starting to leak the same pus. What should I do?

Small openings like this is not uncommon, but a foul smell is not normal I recommend you see your PS to discuss this concern best of luck.

From the picture you posted, there doesn't seem to be cellulitis (blanching skin redness) to indicate a skin infection. A wound opening in that exact spot is not uncommon after breast reduction and almost always heals very well with local wound care. You can experience non-foul smelling serous yellow or fatty appearing drainage from the site. Purulent drainage (pus) has a foul odor and is typically accompanied with cellulitis. See your plastic surgeon to assure that your wound is healing well and sooner if you are experiencing foul smelling drainage or skin redness.

Hi. I'm sorry to hear that you are going through this.  I would usually review my patients weekly (or more frequently) to ensure they are getting the support they need.  This is not an uncommon problem, and is usually managed with good wound care.  Perhaps see if you can get another appointment with your surgeon sooner - or with their nurse, to reassure you & check on your progress.  All the best & time will heal.

From what I can see it looks like your incision is opening. A foul odor is never a good thing. I would suggest you call your surgeon's office today and let them know what's going on.

Thank you for posting the pictures.  Unfortunately, the dehiscence (wound opening) at this location is fairly common.  The areas do not look red.  However, foul smelling purulent discharges (pus) are concerning.  I understand your concerns.  Have you consulted your PS for antibiotics?

Thanks for your question and photos.  A breakdown along the T zone is probably the most common area after a breast reduction surgery.  Smoking, diabetes, obesity are all risk factors for this.  If the wound is clean, pink without drainage, then good wound care will suffice.  However if it is getting larger, creamy or purulent drainage, or now has an odor than antibitoics may be needed.  Please call your plastic surgeons office and describe the changes that have occurred.  They may want to see you back in the office or start some antibiotics before they see you.  Good luck.
