How long will it take for my hemoglobin/hematocrit to increase?

If the hemoglobin is less than 8 and you are symptomatic, it is reasonable to consider a blood transfusion.  However, your PS, PCP, and hematologist are in a better position to evaluate this for you.Best to be seen by a hematologist who can recommend an appropriate regimen based upon the cause for the anemia.  In general, 11-12 is adequate for surgery if attention to hemostasis is meticulous.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

You need to be investigated for the low Hb. Presuming this has been done and you are under treatment then usually you would have a check Hb prior to surgery. That will dictate whether proceeding on Feb 14th is a good idea or not. 

Pamela,Without a known history of significant anemia (Hemoglobin of 8), you should have a hematological consultation first.  If strictly iron deficiency or related to heavy flows, your hemoglobin should be safely at 9.0-9.5 by mid February.Best of luck with your workup.Dr T

A hemoglobin of 8 should be investigated by a hematologist. I do not believe that your regimen of self treatment will be sufficient to boost it quickly.  First, it's important to know the basis for the anemia. Second, I believe that medical clearance is essential.  You may need iron infusion treatment.  Best wishes.
